4.5 Easy to read, easy directions and written in understandable terms. Woot Woot ! becoming an influencer is a dream that I and many others have, getting there is not a natural thing. This is a new world and Ms. Hennessy walks us through it gently explaining each step with clear detailing. The relationships building, the contacts, the followers, all of it. I think any vlogger, blogger, online seller, online reviewer, social networker, would find great help between these covers. The book is well organized for quick reference too. Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for a copy to review.

For what this book gives you, it deserves 5 stars. This is a short read that inspires and gives you the dets about how others did it and how you can begin. I think the best info it gives you is that even though all these influencers look like they have a perfect life, they are putting in long hours for that one post you are waiting for. I feel like I am capable of pushing my limits and finding my own success. Thank you Brittany!

Influencer is a four part, 8 chapter book. It covers Building Your Community, Packaging Your Brand, Monetizing Your Influence, and Planning Your Future.

First, the time of the author is a bit condescending. It can and does grate on your nerves after awhile. It comes off as more of bragging but I’ve seen some people in high positions think and act that same way.

Secondly, regardless of her tone the information she provides is valuable.

I’ve taken notes and made a few changes. It helps to be able to go back and refresh with the information in case I missed something.

The example accounts she provides are helpful if you’re in that specific niche. If you’re not, if can be a bit hard to figure out which way to go.

Majorty if bloggers are in the health, fitness, food, beauty, fashion, travel, and mom category. For the rest of us in other niches, it would’ve been nice to have examples.

3.5 stars, as someone who also works in the influencer agency I think a lot of this book can be learned for free without paying for it but there are some interesting lessons as well.

I must admit that I only got about 15% into the book, so this review may not be the best one to judge if this book would be helpful for you. The reason I decided not to finish reading the book, however, is because I did not find the approach helpful to me.

I do believe that there are a lot of helpful tips in the book for those who would like to be influencers and make money doing it, but I didn't like all the "shoulds" and "have tos". Even though you already have a vlog, you should also have a blog. Don't say swear words, because if you do, we immediately pass you over for any of our campaigns. And so on.

I appreciate that the author is probably speaking from her own experience and what her company looks for in the influencers they work with, but I definitely don't believe it to be true for every niche, market, audience, etc., and I don't like broad statements like that. I feel like it causes more harm than good for those who want to be influencers.

I have a blog, but plenty of people I follow and admire on social media don't, and they do extremely well without one. I like to swear, and I love people who swear, they make me feel right at home. If someone I followed who swears a lot suddenly stops swearing because they were trying to appeal to the author's views of what an influencer should be, I would instantly lose respect for them. I feel that authenticity is more important that a squeaky clean image, and I would rather follow an influencer who knows exactly who they are and make no apologies for it, than one who changes who they are to try to please their audience.

Again, I didn't read past the first 15% of the book, but you could probably get some good tips out of it if you ignored the approach. I just prefer something that is more inclusive and understanding of a varied audience, and that values authenticity over mass appeal.

Hennessy's style is light and conversational, like an older sister or friend giving you advice. Most of what she shares should be common sense--answer emails and calls in a timely manner, don't be rude or entitled, be willing to work for what you get, and respect deadlines for a few. However, it seems that some who she works with never got these memos, so it's good that she shares them.

While I am not the target audience for this book, I was still able to enjoy Hennessy's stories and am glad I took the time to listen to it.

This review is for Influencer: Building Your Personal Brand in the Age of Social Media, By Brittany Hennessy. Published by Citadel Press. I would consider it business nonfiction, personal development. The book length is approximately 256 pages. The publication date is July 31, 2018.

*** I received a paperback version of this book from a giveaway on Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. ***

I give this book a 4/5 Star rating.

What kind of nonfiction story receives a 4-star rating from me:

1. The intent or message was well stated and kept me interested in the topic.
2. The subject matter was explained well.
3. The topic is well researched but lacked some detail.
4. I will recommend this book to others who also are interested in this topic.

Key thoughts:

This book has great tips and insights into being an influencer. There are tips and insights from influencer icons, agents, and more. There are even sections called “Don’t be that girl” that tell you what not to do. If you are ready to take your influencing skills to the next level this book would be a handy tool to get familiar with.

Review:

This book does a great job explaining what to do once you have become semi-influential. If you are in the lifestyle or fashion skill set it’s even better for you. A few things that you can take away from this book and implement right away are: use more than one platform, learn from others that do what you are doing and be human.

Influencer talks about using multiple platforms at the same time, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and a blog/vblog. It also recommends checking out and subscribing to influencers that have the same interests as you do. You can learn a lot from and share tips with these influencers. This book also reminds you to not be too perfect, to show that you can make mistakes and have bad days like the people who follow you. Most importantly, don’t let the haters get you down.

While there are pieces of this book that I can definitely use right away, I feel this book is geared more towards those influencers that have already found their niche and have over 100k followers. I also found this book was aimed more towards those who are pursuing a fashion or lifestyle career.

Overall though it was a good read. I will definitely keep it on my bookshelf and reference back to it every now and then to see if I am going in the right direction. I would say anyone who wants a career in the influencer business can definitely glean some great tips from this book and I would definitely recommend it.
