Hmm...I'd never even heard of this one before. It's Robby's lunch bunch book this month, so we read it together. I think the story was entertaining and we shared some laughs at the 'magic' spell that Mr. Hoppy puts on Alfie. I found a few of the phrases odd and considered they may be cultural/dated since this is originally published in (gasp) 1990! I also found it peculiar that this was a story meant for children and the two main characters are adults - one middle-aged woman and the other a retired man. The premise is funny at best, but deceitful at worst. Lots to discuss during his book club I suspect!

Kapan jadinya, coba??? :)

What says "I Love You" better than a tortoise???? He he. I read this again last night, and it is a silly little story. Not a lot to it in many ways, but still entertaining. If only life was that easy - sort out the object of your heart's tortoise problems and they will immediately marry you. I do quite like this story though because I always wanted a tortoise when I was little.

2016 note - review from my 2007 bookcrossing journal.

I don't love that a guy lies to a woman he wants to be with, ends up donating her beloved pet, and marrying her under false pretenses.
I'll force myself to believe that the woman knew all along what he was up to and just wanted a bigger tortoise and had no emotional attachment to that particular tortoise in question.
The illustrations are great and makes it seem super sweet, but after reading it I found it a little off putting. Not my favorite of Dahl for sure.
inspiring fast-paced

another shortie but defiantly an original story. this is the first time i have aver read this one but i can still remember the tape audio book i had of this one which i played so many times. my only complaint is despite how clever Mr. Hoppy's plan was i do not like the message that Dahl is spreading by suggesting that our pets are interchangeable even one as much loved as Alfie. despite this if you don't read too much into this book it is a wonderfully humorous read for kids.

Ummm. This was kind of cute but also kind of creepy.
funny lighthearted fast-paced

my very first Roald Dahl read! i felt like i became a child again while reading this book. it's a quick yet a witty read! i just found my palate cleanser author 😄

Enjoyable. Good children's book

I thought this would end with some sort of moral about not tricking people into falling in love with you but it DOESNT. What a SHAME
