Loved this book! Really enjoyed Anthony Briggs translation. I thought it would be really slow but I could hardly put it down. The beginning is a little confusing trying to remember all the characters names, but once you know who the main characters are, it is wonderful.

Me: I don't understand why War and Peace is so critically acclaimed.

Him: [sarcastically] That's just because you're not reading it correctly so you're not picking up on the hidden symbolism and themes.

Me: There is literally no symbolism. You can't even pretend there's symbolism with this book. And as far as themes go, the only theme is everyday life. War isn't even a theme. Or peace. Or anything besides the mundanity of everyday.

Him: [laughs]

Me: It's just a recounting of daily events. It doesn't even fit the criteria of a book. There's no overarching plot which needs to be resolved within the confines of the book.

Life’s too short to, in the words of a friend” take a pleasurable activity that delights and moves us, and makes us see the world from different perspectives, and then turn that activity into a chore.”  The sheer length of this book and the overwhelming number of characters made the reading seem like a chore.  So- huge kudos to anyone who reads this and enjoys it.  It’s a classic for a reason, I’m sure.  But for me…  I watched the drama series.  It was good.

read this for a class + interest in russian lit… i have to say that while i enjoyed it, i was rather let down (particularly by the epilogue? hello?). i guess it’s on me for expecting tolstoy to have something intelligent to say about how women interact with the russian patriarchal system but i was still frustrated. marya and natasha you were done so dirty and i’m sorry <3 it was a good book though and i’m glad i read it.

After two years of reading bits and pieces at a time, I've conquered the behemoth. Even as I languish in pride, however, I know I'll want to read it again, and this time tear it apart and really get to the substance I only sensed by this peeking in type of reading. Next time I'll study it. This time was for the bragging rights. :P

I read this because it's "one of the best books ever written". I don't know if it's the translation, or that I'm not smart, or that maybe it's just really not that great.

I found it...interesting, in the way a wikipedia article is.

My ego decided at some point it needed to read "the classics", so I read a bunch of them and this was probably the least enjoyable.

This is one of those times I'm willing to admit I am probably wrong, because the book gets so much acclaim. But yeah, not feeling it.
