As a fan of nonfiction history books just like those Martin used as inspiration, Fire and Blood perfectly matches the experience of learning more details about events whose ending you already know. The book's small failings lie mostly in the lack of characterizarion of its in-universe author and the historical figures he discusses — something that could have easily been done via more opinionated narration and more personal in-universe sources.

3.5? This was entirely too long I’m sorry. If it was going to be that long give me more of the drama in first person POV. I get the point I get the assignment but like oh my god talk faster. I did love getting the backstory and seeing how it was going to tie into GoT. At least like how the show did. Overall I did enjoy it and the drama but the fact that it was told as a history book took away from it being 10x better

I guess I didn't review this the first time I read it?
But, to be fair, this is a tough book to review, it's essentially a really well-written, fictional history book. And I kind of love it. I particularly love this "choose your own adventure" approach to history - different versions of the same story, different takes on character motivations, different interpretations of events. I do wish this was a series of novels, and actually seeing GRRM write amazing dialogue and in-depth character interactions would have been fascinating. But, even as is, it's a wonderful addition to the World of Ice and Fire. Impossible to remember it all or to keep all of these events, names and relationships straight, but still wonderful.
