going to be completely honest here, i started skimming 650 pages in, and it is fair to say that it was a dnf at 720. this is an example of a great book that is not very good. george shows a solid command over the scope of the story, but since it is written like a history book in third person omniscient, there is little interiority into the characters. after characters die, there is barely any breathing room for the plot or for their loved ones to grieve their losses. after rhaenyra’s death i found it very hard to care. and jacaerys velaryon…

I really enjoyed this Book & everyone should stop what they’re doing and start reading this Book.

This isn’t a typical story/novel, and reads more like a colorfully narrated history book. But man, GRRM’s world building and attention to detail has never been more evident to me than in this, even moreso than the GoT books. It’s perplexing how deeply planned and well laid out all of the minute details have to be, to be carried around from books written 25 years ago to be tied into the history laid out here- especially from side families you wouldn’t have presumed he planned as meticulously. I kept stopping while reading and just being in awe, even if the story wasn’t necessarily that gripping to follow in the way this was written.

HISTORY GALORE
I loved this book maybe because I am a big fan of history especially a history with Dragons involved, or it could be simply because it is a well written book! I went into it knowing full well it was another Song if Ice and Fire book!
My favorite Kings were of course Aegon the Conqueror as well as Jaehaerys I. I know this account is told with a lot of Bias so we have to take what Archmaester Gyldayn with some skepticism.
Some of my favorite chapters were:
Aegon’s Conquest
Reign of the Dragon
Three Heads Had the Dragon
The Long Reign
Aftermath- The Hour of The Wolf
Under The Regents- The Voyage of Alyn Oakenfist
Overall I loved pretty much every aspect of this book! I know it’s not for everyone but it was definitely for Me!
