reads like a history book. the chapters right before and after the house of the dragon stuff was good but the rest was long and confusing. I wish they believed in not naming everyone the same thing

If all history books were written like this, I might have paid more attention at school.

A bit like reading a textbook but I can't say I wasn't warned. Yep, you read that right, I've been reading this book for 1.5 years. Can't wait for House of the Dragon season 2 premier so I can act better than everyone else for having read the book.

Honestly you could stop after the dance of the dragons part of the book. I didn't really care about the parts after that.

Congratulations are due to George on 2 counts.
First, he successfully wrote a novel length wikihole. Secondly, he procrastinated finishing writing a book by writing a different fucking book.
I would also credit him with making history exciting, except this is all deep background for his fantasy series and in no way actual history. I enjoyed it but I'm so done with reading about tongues and penises being cut off, of which there was a lot. Thankfully very little rape, unless you count statutory rape in which case, yeah, lots of that too unfortunately.

This book is phenomenal. Reads like a history book and some narratives are unreliable but it makes the book all that more interesting.

Not this book making me root for incest?!?

So much death in some of the chapters that I did put it down a few times for a much needed brain break.

Any GOT or HOD fans would be wise to read this book. This is one I will revisit and reread. With so much information and so many interesting characters I wouldn’t be surprised to find something new every time I go back for more.

Þessi bók höfðar líklega til frekar þröngs hóps. Skálduð saga skáldaðrar ættar sem réði einu sinni ríkjum í skálduðum heimi. Ég hafði áhuga því mér finnast ASOIAF og Dunk and Egg sögurnar frábærar.

Ef þú ert að bíða eftir The Winds of Winter þá mæli ég ekki með því að lesa þessa. Eftir á að hyggja þá er í rauninni ótrúlegt að Martin hafi skrifað þetta rugl á undan seinustu tveimur sem að enn vantar í ASOIAF seríuna. Shame! Shame! Shame!

I started reading it after the show came out and it really enhances the whole experience. This boo is written as an academic history lesson from a cool teacher (maester). The professor uses different sources and draws conclusions from the sources' coincidences, omissions and authors. This all may sound dry but it isn't, even though you get mostly facts and interpretations of facts.

The fact that we get mostly plot in the book makes it wonderfully adaptive to TV and reading it as you see the show enhances both. In the book you get to see how history saw the events (with its follies and imperfections) vs how the characters lived it.

It's hard to believe Martin is spending time writing these snooze-fests instead of finishing the main work. There is nothing here that feels like his otherwise addictive and engaging writing style, full of interesting characters and intricate plots. They're pure history books about a not very interesting bit of pre A Song of Ice and Fire history, quick summaries of events with very little depth. Mushroom's observations are the only things injecting a bit of life into it. Other than that, it's a complete waste of time
