Bones

This was such a fantastic read a post-apocalyptic story that has so much darkness trauma and pain but then it also had such a profound sense of found family. It's all told from our main character's POV Bones who has the ability of healing, a gift but also a curse that has affected every aspect of her life.

After Bones escapes her bonds only to fall foul of another set of chains her liberation then comes in the form of another group of individuals. Looking for a secret weapon they instead find Bones and she finds herself again with her choices removed as she is forced to return to their compound called the vault.

Now under the thumb of the sadistic Vault leader Madame,  Bones is put to work as the new healer but with extra duties that consist of regular visits to the dungeon to assist Madame as she attempts to stamp out a brewing rebellion. She's also now the newest member of Mac’s crew which consists of individuals hand-picked by him including his adopted brother Trey, someone who Bones can't help but be drawn to despite her utilising every effort to keep him at arms length. People she cares about don't last long around her and Bones is determined to make sure Trey isn't another casualty of her acquaintance.

This was super dark and bloody heartbreaking. Bones just can't seem to catch a break and this took me on a rollercoaster of a ride all the way from euphoric highs then deep to the depths of despair. Very few books move me to tears but this had me sobbing like a baby. I still have a massive lump in my throat that refuses to go away.

I highly recommend this and I couldn't put it down I was bloody transfixed. I'm astounded that this is a debut. So yeah if you want to be totally destroyed then this is the book that will do it for sure.

You’re going to cry…… this story was dark and EXCELLENT.  The story is captivating and refreshingly different. It’s a great break from the usual story.
However, Bones goes through it. Her story is heartbreaking. She has the ability to heal through magic in a dystopian world and everyone wants to use her abilities for their own agenda. She’s exiled at the age of 10, found by a warlord(for lack of a better description) & the story goes from there.
The found family is amazing. The fear and tension are real. I literally stopped reading because they were finally safe. I was afraid of what was coming so I put it down.
A cliffhanger ending had me picking up the second book immediately.
Read the trigger warnings because you’ll need them. But this story was excellent and I’d recommend to everyone.

holy freaking crap. this is heartbreaking. devastating. gut wrenching. and yet beautiful at the same time to see Bones go through what she does and come out the other side. not many could endure what she has and still find the will to keep going. this will not be a book for everyone, so definitely check out the warnings and read the description before you decide to just wing it. your mental health matters.

I would have loved to have some back story on why the world is the way it is now, and the middle does slow a bit, but none of that takes away from what this book made me feel. and I had alll the feels. 🖤

The first 30% was good but the rest was so repetitive that I was tempted to DNF. I’ll probably read book 2 but I’m worried it’s going to be more of the same “I’m fine”

It’s been so long since I’ve had my heart shattered by a book😭🤪 This is truly well written and I’m surprised it hasn’t taken over booktok by storm yet.

Bones has a very character-driven plot where the fmc embarks on an emotional recovery journey and—duh—falls in love. The world building is on the mild end so if you can imagine what post apocalypse is (reminds me of twd?), you’re good. What you MUST take note is the content triggers so please triple check before reading!

Here are some reasons I held back on rating 5⭐️: How does the magic system function? How did the apocalypse happen? The sickness, was it a plague or some magic thing?? The side effects of channeling power through another, is it irreversible? And I refuse to let go of that cliffhanger. Yknow which one👹🔪🔪

The last 20% were pretty intense with so much action, plot twists, and cliffhangers that left me speechless. If this is only book 1, I cannot wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds🛒🏃🏻‍♀️

Bleak. Absolutely check triggers for this because it is DARK. The story itself is excellent. The characters are particularly well developed, each with distinct personalities and compelling arcs that made it easy to become invested. I hated the FMC with a burning passion and nothing will change that. The pacing was unfortunately a struggle. Some parts dragged endlessly, while others felt rushed, making the narrative feel disjointed. Add in some repetitive passages, and there were moments where my patience wore thin. But that ending? Devastating. It left me hollowed out and emotionally wrecked. I want to read the next one (maybe), but I’m taking a break first.
