- Help foster a love for book in children by READING FOR DELIGHT (what do they enjoy...)
- Use the Llama Llama quote "Little Llama, don't you know, Mama Llama loves you so? Mama Llama's always near, even if she's not right here."
- Allow for movement during reading time (and snacks)
- kids that see reading as a source of enjoyment end up doing better (and are better readers)

could have done without the first section and most of the second. I had already bought into the idea that reading aloud is crucial to my family’s culture. That being said, it’s still worth the purchase to have the easy reference to her open-ended questions and book lists.
In her book, MacKenzie describes the importance of reading aloud to your children, and her reasoning is backed by scientific studies and research.
There are so many reasons why reading aloud is good for your child and your relationship with your child. However, my biggest takeaway was that people are able to listen at a comprehension level higher than their reading comprehension level, so it is important to continue reading aloud to your children even after they know how to read on their own. But this truth goes for us adults as well. If you are tackling a difficult book, it may be wise to listen to the audiobook so that you are not spending brain power on deciphering the words instead of digesting the content.
The final section of the book is a list of read-aloud book suggestions, categorized by age. As you can see from my photo, I've already gathered up a selection of these recommendations

As a early childhood teacher and literacy specialist, I agree with many of the suggestions and support the research cited in the book. From a teacher AND a parent perspective I believe we are killing the love of reading before children are even given a chance to become readers.
I love the book lists and will be recommending the book to families as well as adding it to our professional library.

This book has opened my eyes to sooo many facets of the work that is raising a reader. I’m not a parent and I think while this book is geared toward parents, aunties, friends and really anyone who knows and loves a little one should read this.
Personally, I want to be the auntie who always gives books for presents and who reads to my friends’ kids. This book discusses everything from why it’s important to read to children to tips to reading to kids under 3. There’s also a great book list for various ages especially geared toward reading aloud to kids. In addition, the author has a chapter dedicated to discussing books with children without sounding like an interrogator!
Even parents whose kids are already readers will benefit from reading this book. Have I mentioned that it is such easy-to-read non fiction?! It is!

A wonderful addition to my collection of anthologies, Sarah Mackenzie has managed to add something special with this new book. As a homeschooler, I already own several of this genre (Give your child the world, honey for a child's heart, etc) but Sarah manages to add something special with her books specifically selected for their value as read alouds. I appreciate that she has picture books on every list (even for teens) as well as marking certain books as good audiobook choices.
The bulk of the book is an inspiring case for reading aloud. I'm already convinced (I've been a Read Aloud Revival listener for years) but even still I have a dozen or more book darts marking passages that once again renew me for this read aloud journey - desperately needed as we wrap up the school year and everyone is facing a bit of burn out.
Highly recommend, especially if you don't have a family habit of reading aloud yet. Sarah makes it feel so DOABLE!

If you know me, I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I absolutely LOVED The Read-Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie. There are so many great things to say about this book, and I underlined probably half of it and drew little hearts and wrote “YES!” in the margins on every other page. This book speaks my language and perfectly explains why reading with our children is not only a great thing to do, but the BEST thing we can do for them.
She discusses how to create a literature-rich environment at home, how to make sure our kids fall in love with books and stories and reading, how reading with our kids creates magical memories and bonds is together as a family as we share experiences through books. She explains how reading develops a deep sense of empathy and compassion in our children and how reading aloud from day one until they leave your house as 18 year olds sets them up for school success.
As if all that wonderful theory and research weren’t enough, she goes on to share very practical and tangible ways to make read-alouds happen even in the midst of busy work and school and extracurricular schedules. She explains in detail how to have meaningful conversations with your kids about books and how to ask important questions that get them talking.
And finally, she has fantastic annotated book lists broken up by age group that I KNOW will be coming with me on future library trips.
If you’re a parent or a teacher, get your hands on this book!! We need to be reading aloud to all kids, at every age, frequently. It’s the best thing we can do for them!

I love listening to The Read-Aloud Revival podcast, and was thrilled to learn that Sarah had a new book coming out. It’s a fantastic resource for families new to reading aloud, families who need encouragement to keep reading aloud, and families who are solid in the read aloud arena. The book list in part three is fabulous; I read with my phone in hand so I could start queuing up books in my library list!
Excellent book written by an excellent mother and homeschool veteran. She did so well explaining the benefits of reading aloud to all ages of kids (not just home schoolers at all!). It is so enriching and emboldening as a mother, and I highly recommend this to anyone willing to listen. ❤️
My first purchase of 2018 for myself! I decided to get around my book-buying ban by calling this a "homeschool resource" because I was assured that I'd be referring to it again and again, so it's more like a reference book. I imagine my enablers will be happy to know that they are correct. Sarah Mackenzie's wisdom from her podcast on this topic has been artfully distilled down into this book, to the tune of me wanting to buy 10 more copies so I just have them on hand for everyone I know. Especially the people who ask me about how I got my own kiddos so addicted to reading and how they want to change the reading culture in their own homes but don't know how. (What? You don't have these conversations??). Sarah has all kinds of knowledge as to how to incorporate reading, how to get your kids to fall in love with reading, what to do with audiobooks or late readers, why it's important to keep reading aloud even to your teens, what to do with fidgety listeners, and even how to ask good questions about the books your kids are reading in order to create a book club culture in your home. Finally, book lists at the end (20 titles for each of 4 age ranges) will enable you to start building your personal collection in a meaningful and intentional way. The whole thing is just gold.
