This book is fantastic for families who want build a read a loud culture in their home!
This book was so much more than I expected! It lost a star for not being religiously inclusive, but otherwise I loved it. I thought it would be a list of books to read aloud with your children and some commentary to go along with it, but it talked about so much more than just what to read: how to read, how to select books, how to talk about books, how to get your kids interested, etc.
Already spearheading a read-aloud family of my own, this book reaffirmed my beliefs about reading with my kids. It also gave me some new ideas, including conversation starters and specific book recommendations. I am also a listener of Sarah’s podcast and I was happy to recognize suggestions I have already heard, they are great reminders.
I did find the religious references distracting throughout the book, likely because I am not religious. They can be overlooked, however.

I borrowed this book as a Kindle version from the library. As soon as I finished it, I bought a physical copy to keep. Mackenzie gave so many ideas that I’m already implementing such as having things the kids can do with their hands; using high interest, well narrated audiobooks; and making it a consistent, albeit, imperfect practice for as little as 10min every other day. These are things that I did when the girls were young that I couldn’t figure out how to implement with middle grade 11yr old kids. Now, we are back at it, and I can’t wait to build these bookish connections with my kids. I will also be gifting this book at any future baby showers I go to as it is just that good filled with practical advice.
Amazing book if you want to build a family culture around book. I highly recommend Sarah MacKenzie's books, podcast, and website.
Overall I really liked this one. It gave me so many great ideas on how to make reading aloud a part of my life with my daughter!

What is it about?
Sarah Mackenzie is the founder of the Read Aloud Revival website and podcast. Now she has gathered all her knowledge into a quick guide on reading out loud with your children from 0 through the teens. She argues that a child is never too old to be read to and that books are the BEST way of connecting with your children and providing them with a strong foundation for success.
Was it good?
I think Sarah’s ideas about reading are very agreeable and I love the tips on discussion questions, book club atmosphere, and especially the book lists at the end of the book.
I can be a good mother, read to my children, and raise my children well regardless of religious affiliation. Sarah appears to be a very devout Christian and thus mentions God and his will all-throughout the book. I don’t feel comfortable reading about things like this and it took away from my enjoyment of the book.
Despite that, I did enjoy the book a lot and found the tips and suggestions to be helpful. I feel very motivated to keep reading to my children (now 5,3, and 1) even when they learn to read for themselves. And, I don’t feel like I need to rush into chapter books anymore.
I’ve added a ton of books to my TBR to read to the children and I look forward to the many years of happy reading for all of us.

"By the time our children leave our homes, we don't want them to wonder whether their lives matter. We want them to know that they do. If we tell them enough stories, they will have encountered hard questions and practice living through so many trials, hardships, and unexpected situations that, God willing, they will have what they need to become the heroes of their own stories." - Sarah Mackenzie. I HIGHLY recommend this book for any parent who wants to build a lasting connection with their child. Reading to pre-readers and beginning readers is important but the importance of reading aloud to a pre-teen and teen is so often overlooked. This book will inspire parents to prioritize reading aloud and the author gives great tips on how to start - whether you're a new parent or just new to reading aloud.
