Love Sarah Mackenzie and her love for books. This was a very inspiring read and also informative and practical. Great book lists too.
3.5 stars There's a good bit of anecdotal fluff in here that I could have done without, but it was still very readable nonetheless. If you look beyond the unnecessary, there is a lot of good information in here about the why of reading aloud and some practical advice on how to work it into family life. The last four chapters with age-group specific tips and book lists are particularly helpful.
informative
slow-paced
Depends too much on other’s blog posts and podcasts- little in the way of actual research. Also, entirely too much religion in this book, which didn’t bill itself as such. The layout of the book was very poorly done- having quote call outs within the text is ok- when they aren’t the exact same words side by side. Will give it points for inspiration- I did revaluate my reading relationship with my daughter and my tendency to encourage her to read harder texts. In that way I guess the author was successful.
Much of the text was heavy-handed, but there are some good points to take from this book. There are a few studies referenced, but does not contain a lot of science. This is also a Christian book, which is not referenced at all in the synopsis -- most of the information is relevant outside of Christianity, but be aware going in that it is mentioned quite a bit. The recommended read-aloud lists are much more diverse than the main text would suggest, which was a welcome surprise. If you are interested in the Christian aspect, she recommends bibles for each age range. Skip if you're looking for a stronger science-based or secular approach, but otherwise contains good information for discussing books with your kids and how to pick good read-aloud books.
This book is a MUST READ for all parents! It has left me so inspired and encouraged to continue to read aloud to my children! I loved the recommendations in the back too. So helpful!!
My biggest takeaway from this was that you don't have to be a perfect parent if you're reading to your kids. Sharing books with your kids can pick up where you lack. I really liked that it had a lot of really practical, normal-families-can-do-this ideas on nurturing a book culture in your home. Plus the book lists! I added 122 books to Goodreads based on her recs.
3.5 stars. I love Sarah Mackenzie, so I listen to many podcasts and subscribe to her membership group, so much of this information is not new to me.
