Meisterwerk! In jeder Hinsicht perfekt.

I read it in one sitting, couldn’t put it down. The german original has beautiful language and the story moved me on a deeper level, because it is a story about humans coping and how sometimes it also destroys them.

I finished listening to the audiobook in one sitting. Until the ending, I had no idea where the story was heading to, but I was still enjoying the ride.
On the surface, this story is about two chess geniuses competing against each other, however, chess is not really the point. Actually, chess could be replaced by any other game or sport. It's about human resilience and obsession.
The peak of the entire story is the backstory of Dr. B, explaining how he became a master of chess while not having played a single match in 20 years. It's tragic and shows how people can endure a lot through the power of their mind, however, the mind can also become a prison through obsession.
I think everyone should read this book. It does stick with you and makes you think about all the possible layers underneat a simple game of chess.

Past a certain point the book was just electric. So compact and brilliant. Interesting exploration of monomania (new world learned!)—how capable yet frail the human mind can be when pushed to the extremes. I think I've just found my kind of classic.
