oh…. this book went places that I would’ve never dreamed of happening!! so good. &, get why Zweig is an inspiration for Wes Anderson too now!
this was my first book by him, & first book to read from an handful of the new Penguin Archive series… so clean in design & absolutely beautiful as an object!! with nicer paper / typesetting inside than the Penguin Modern books, not to mention the sturdy lovely stock of the cover (& the red text is impressed into it as it’s quite thick)!
more to say, but right now just a bit speechless & thinking on it all!

About the games we play, and the games we lose. About life and the reality we choose.
I keep picking up books about/around WW2 by accident. Intense. Recommend the single sitting read.
From this point on is vague spoilers, given how short a book it is.
The description of Dr. B's imprisonment and room and torture was haunting, and the description of his 're-lapse' was painful. It all felt so true. Looking up the author afterwards, and the internet's ready willingness to tell his cause of death, bring a potent immediacy to the whole work. Times all too known, all too real. Rooms experienced and mind games entertained. Paths too trodden by too many, well known by too many. And if everyone understood this... well, I guess there'd be no problems. Strong, strong book. Intense.

Struggling to pick out a single reason as to why I like this I just found for a book about playing chess it was quite gripping and when insanity looms is when it got really interested. You don’t need to know how to play chess to enjoy this book
