Buddy Read with Tracy (who'll I'll link later)!

Let's hope this is amazing and not extremely cliche and boring ... Please Lord, I pray.

When a lone soldier, Cole, arrives with news of Lachlan Agatta's death, all hope seems lost for Catarina. Her father was the world's leading geneticist, and humanity's best hope of beating a devastating virus. Then, hidden beneath Cole's genehacked enhancements she finds a message of hope: Lachlan created a vaccine.

Only she can find and decrypt it, if she can unravel the clues he left for her. The closer she gets, the more she finds herself at risk from Cartaxus, a shadowy organization with a stranglehold on the world's genetic tech. But it's too late to turn back.

There are three billion lives at stake, two people who can save them, and one final secret that Cat must unlock. A secret that will change everything.- Goodreads

This is one of my favorite reads. If a book can make me look at science in a different way then it gets major points. Cole was my favorite character not because of her skills but because she had the mouth to back it. She wasn't naive and allowed things to happen. She made things happen as best as she could and she stayed true to what she wanted to do which was to find her father.

The novel had a good pace and details that didn't feel as if it was dragging. Now let's talk about the science. It was easy to understand while still retaining its complexity and not feeling as if it is being dumbed down. It was well written.

I loved the character development in this story.

Crazy, brilliant, ingenious they are the three words I would use to describe ‘This Mortal Coil’

In a tech controlled world Catarina and her father Lauchlan are genius’. He is known for his brilliance, but in the past has made mistakes, now the virus is coming for all of them and he needs to make a vaccine. Cartaxus – the company that controls the apps that are available to change your world for the better, from making food taste better, to helping you heal.

I really enjoyed this book, it sits clearly on the YA Sci-fi and fantasy shelf, has interesting characters and its easy to connect with Catarina as you read. Today’s world is so full of technology with a lot of it being managed by apps the future vision feels like it’s a path we could be headed down, scientific research, only learning so much from animals and the ability to grow horns or change your hair colour at the push of a button feels like its nearly a possibility. Its all about trying to outwit nature and change evolution – perfect for getting your imagination fired up.

This was a lovely surprising ARC from net galley, in exchange for an honest review.

This book was addicting. I love how there were twists and turns that caught me by surprise. I loved the characters. I loved the DNA aspects. It was just SO GOOD.

Well this is awkward. The first time I read this novel in 2018, I gave it 5 stars. I never read the sequels but decided I wanted to give them a try, yet I couldn't remember much from this book.

But as I started reading again, i began to remember some of the plot twists, so everything felt too cliche, and not in a fun or interesting way. I didn't enjoy Catarina as a character as much, the world building required too much suspension disbelief, and I didn't buy into the romance at all.

I did end up remembering THE major plot twist from my first read through, which might be why I rated this book so highly back then. I didn't see it coming, and at the time, it seemed super clever. This time around, it felt icky and kind of cheap.

I think I'll still try to read the second book just to see what happens, but I'm so sad I didn't enjoy this the second time. :(

DNF at page 197. Gave it a decent chance, the first 50 pages were intriguing but it seemed to go downhill from there.

4 Stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Genetics, technology, LURKERS, deadly viruses, Coding, huge plot twists, small romance and fast paced. Wow well this was a HUGE GEEKFEST if I do say so myself. I’m not a huge fan of technology/science and this book is full of it. I usually get confused with all the lingo- BUT the author is a Genius and made me feel SUPER SMART and all nerdy reading this gem. The story was totally unique and catches you from the very beginning- and with that cliffhanger I’m only left wanting more ;) I’m sure this book won’t be for everyone, but I found it quite entertaining.
