Lost me there for a bit towards the end, but I got back on the horse shortly after.

The way main character was introduced as this bad ass lady that owns the place and will not be messed with, ruling this misfit reject corner of the town that is very popular and well liked did not make sense by the end of the book.
The more the book went on the more she became this demsel in distress that could not do anything for herself and was just more or less dragged left and right by the dudes around her.

I am a bit torn rating this book.
On the one hand this was way too long, like way too long. But on the other hand I really enjoyed the characters, the romance and especially the last 5%.
But... the book just felt so long. This could have been at least 100 pages shorter.

Tiny bit of spoiler ahead:
The FMCs power sounds so intriguing but the use of it was lackluster. On the one hand she uses it in the first chapter for some drunken sailor and then constantly refuses to use it when needed. I don't understand what her plan was. She is ordered to get information to be free but she doesn't do anything to get the information to be free. But talks like soon its over, but no, if you dont do your job its not over.

I am not sure if I want to continue the series. Book 2 is again nearly 500 pages long.

I'm wish I like this book more. It has such high potential, but the writing didn't really stick with me. I also don't like the love triangle. It feels forced to me. Maybe there are more to Merick's story, but I kinda feel like it is unnecessary.

I like Lessia. I think she is a unique character. She is strong, independent, and determined to protect her found family. She is not cringey and clingy at any point, and I feel kinda bad for what happened to her.

Locke is okay to I guess. There isn't much about him, since the book is mainly from Lessia pov. He is caring and different from his outer appearance. Other then that, not much about him was given.

Merick is cold and mysterious. He cares about Lessia, but then he has his own back story as well. I love that he cares so deeply about her that
he light the fire for her so she's not scared during the first trial.

I think the characters in the book are likeable. My problem with the book is the plot. It's painfully slow, and there are things that could have been done to make the trials more intense and to stimulate more chemistry between the main characters. It has a lot of mystery that has not been solved, but then the book does not make me want to read more about it.

The last 20% of the book got my jaw dropped tho. It was so fast, so many plot twists happened. I was actually excited for book 2, but then I could not keep up with the love triangle any longer, so I dnf book 2. Maybe I will get back to it one day, but probably not any time soon. Spice: 0.5/5

It had potential to be really good but ended up falling flat. I found it boring 90% of the time.

Some of the things that happened in this book didn’t need to happen if you just thought about it for more than 5 minutes. It often felt like there were scenes the author wanted to include, thought up a convenient way to get there without thinking if it logistically made the most sense? For example the structure of the elections made no sense if the deciding factor was a popularity vote by Ellow’s constituents. There was really no need for the candidates to stay in the castle or any events other than the debates and maybe the interrogations. But alas, we needed forced proximity somehow.

Also you’d think something involving elections would entail more idk…politics? Barely any of that. Instead I got a lukewarm enemies to lovers storyline that I could not care less about (when I wasn’t gagging at their cringey romance scenes). Their chemistry felt inauthentic and was not convincing at all. Generally, I also didn’t really like or feel invested in any of the characters until the ending scene.

The last couple chapters left me curious about where this is going but I’m still deciding whether or not I want to continue this series. For now, I will not be continuing.
