Psychological thriller that has you questioning
This psychological thriller has you questioning to the end what is going on? Becky is a uni student who suffers chronic insomnia. She snatches minutes of micro sleep throughout the day
But when someone starts following her is it a malevolent stalker or is it all in her head.
It was interesting and intriguing and did have me questioning what was actually happened.
Not something I’d read again
But would make a good 90s slasher style movie
Without the slasher side obv and more psychological thriller but yea would transfer well onto screen

I enjoyed this book. I found it slow going at the starts but by the end, I was thoroughly engrossed. The ending was a twist I was not expecting. I would recommend this to anyone.

I Can't Sleep by J E Rowney is a gripping psychological thriller. Becky Braithwaite, a young introvert suffering from insomnia is the protagonist in the story. Struggling to move on her life by forgetting her past, Becky finds no one, but herself can help her. She lost her brother in a car accident and the story shares the tragic events happens in Becky's life after she finds that someone is stalking her. Traumatized by her past, Becky really wants someone to share her problems and worries and she want others to accept her as she is. This book is very well written and clearly explains the stress and struggle an insomniac would encounter. . The twisted and tangled thoughts of Becky is scary and it scares me a lot. I felt like I'm her and being an insomniac is terrible!! This book was so good and I never expected such an amazing twist in the story. Through the life of Becky, the author clearly portrays the importance of love and care should be given to a paranoid person.
I really enjoyed the story, not sure on the hype, but it was really good but the narration took it to another level. I just loved the epilogue what was true and what wasn't. Really well done.
Will definitively be on the lookout for more.
I was given an advance copy by the author and storyorigins but the review is totally my own. Just really enjoyed it.

Thanks to the author for providing an ARC ahead of publication, in return for an honest review. (May contain slight spoilers)
Becky Braithwaite can't sleep and hasn't been able to sleep for some time. Newly arrived at university her insomnia, and its underlying causes, leaves her less able to cope than might normally be expected. Things then start to take a darker turn as Becky feels like someone is watching her.
First things first, this book was a really compelling read. I finished it in two sittings and was definitely invested in the story. That said, there were a few things which were jarring for me - the use of maybe-fictional place names felt odd, as did the occasional US-ism. It brought me out if the story somewhat.
I think also that, with Becky being the age that she is, it was more difficult for me to relate to her as an older reader. There were occasions where I wanted to give her a shake. Not that this constitutes poor writing, quite probably the opposite, as I was still invested in the outcome, I just wasn't sure I *liked* her much as a protagonist. Her decision making is poor, but obviously there are lots of factors in play which make this the case.
The main thing that I struggled with was the ending. The tension builds so well through the book and I found myself looking at the page count thinking it had to be wrong as there surely had to be loads more "stuff" to happen. I had partially guessed that there was something going on that wasn't just in Becky's head, and I'd thought it was to do with her brother's girlfriend but the final result didn't quite ring true for me. It wasn't quite satisfying as an ending.
Ultimately, though the story has stuck in my head and has had me questioning all sorts of small events throughout the book: was that bit "real" or just in Becky's mind? This definitely shows that the writing is engaging and suspenseful! I'll definitely look out other books by this author in future.

This book was a great combination of tragedy and mystery rolled into a familiar college setting. Becky is trying to settle into her role as a college student while dealing with her past and its lasting effects on her mind and body. This combination created a very intriguing character and the pacing of the story was very well done. The writing was also very good and the story left me with a lot to think about which I loved.

Firstly I just want to say that this is an ARC so thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley. This book is about a young woman who has just started university after the tragic loss of her brother and how she struggles with insomnia. It is written in first person and feels very much like reading a diary and it is a really interesting spin. Rowney drip feeds you little bits of information that help you build up a picture about Becky, or so you think, and then just when you think you've figured it out she blows your mind at the very last chapter in a huge reveal that leaves your mind racing with questions. It is such a great read! The only reason I dropped it down a star is because it is a slow burner up until the end but I highly recommend giving it a read. This book is due to be published later this month so keep your eyes peeled for it.
Interesting premise
I was a real fan of this author's other book so I grabbed this one immediately. As an avid thriller/horror reader the thrill in this one didn't grip me but if you like lighter thrills you should give this a try. It was well written and I did find the plot rather interesting. The character is in first person present tense, and an unreliable narrator, so by the end it's very confusing what is real and what isn't. Which may be the point?
I would have given it more stars if the ending was more clear about what happened. All it left for me was more questions.
I did really like Ghosted by this author though so will try other books by them.

It is a psychological thriller that is a great easy read. I found myself flying through the book.
Becky, is a very traumatised character and an unreliable narrator. Given the fact she suffers from insomnia and doesn't realise sometimes that she has nodded off for a micro-sleep. This makes things interesting for us the reader, as we try to piece together and work out if what she is saying is real or her mind playing tricks.
I liked the fact that she was speaking to us directly, it made us feel more involved.
The only thing I can say as a negative is the ending, it felt a bit rushed and left a lot of questions unanswered.

A well written fast paced psychological thriller. Told from Becky’s perspective. Becky is a young woman who suffers from insomnia following the death of her brother. The story see how this impacts on Becky’s daily life. What is interesting is that from only reading the book from Becky’s point of view, you don’t understand until the end of the book how little information you are receiving about why she is is the way she is. The ending of the book was nice surprise as I hadn’t expected it but, I would have liked a little more of an expansion on the ending to allow for complete closure from the story as I had a couple of questions unanswered at the end. But all in all a fantastic read.
