Yes, I did read the first one and think it was largely bad, but yes, I did read the sequel. That's kind of what this series seems to be like. I can't look away? It's bad but entertaining? I don't know, I can't even defend my decision to read this book but I did it and I kind of enjoyed it. It is not high quality, there is a lot of weird stuff having to do with a lack of agency and the main character looking down on sexually exploited girls and she's so weirded out by the very thought of sex and and and and - yeah, it's problematic and annoying. Somehow I want to know how it ends anyway? I don't know. I obviously don't recommend it, but somehow I just can't look away.

This is easily one of the darkest series I've ever read. It's hard to say if this particular book is more disturbing than Wither, or just in different ways. I definitely found it less gripping, although I'm interested to see where the story goes — I think this middle book is just so much less focused than the first, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as it's part of a trilogy, but it didn't pull me in quite as much. Still, it kept my interest enough for me to "put up with" all the incredibly uncomfortable feelings it gave me, and that's a compliment. =)

Kändes mer som en transportsträcka mellan bok #1 & #3. Hoppas på att tredje och sista (?) delen är bättre!

I've read this series before and it still holds up rather well years later.
Though after re-reading this book I remember as to why I don't remember it as well.
The passing of time and the events happening are difficult to track throughout the novel sometimes. There are several dream and drug-induced sequences that are bizarre. IT was rather hard for me to understand what the mc was going through. Though I also believe that was part of the author's point.
I was really able to get through this book because of the first and last in the series. I knew the outcome so whatever was in this book didn't deter me.

Either way, this book works for a second within a series, but not well alone.

I thought it was amazing! :)

This book is mainly on the journey and hardships Rhine and Gabriel face after escaping the house.

It is quite sad to see what they have to go through, and especially the twists at the end.
I can't wait to read book 3 to see what happens to Rhine now that she is once again under Vaughn's power.

Escaping the mansion was just the beginning.

Getting as far as their legs can take them, Rhine and Gabriel are finally free. More dangers lurk as they make their way to Manhattan, Rhine’s home, to find her brother.

This was fantastic. Really pulled me in with chilling description. With twists and turns I was holding on with barely a lick of hope for these two as they trudged through a drugged and ashen world. They both go through so much. I honestly didn’t know how it could’ve gotten worse than being trapped in that mansion.
It did. And I felt so much for both of them. 😢
