The sequel in the Chemical Garden trilogy was definitely nothing like I expected. The setting is obviously different from the first book, but the characters that Rhine and Gabriel encounter are as bizarre as they are different from the previous characters in Wither. Evan Rhine and Gabriel are shadows of their former selves. Their journey to find Rowan, Rhine’s brother, is difficult and sometimes seems impossible. Even the ending of the book left you wondering what is going to happen next – what could possibly happen next?
There are so many possibilities for how the next book can play out and I am super excited to see how the series concludes. I was worried about halfway through the book that it wasn’t going to “stay with me” like Wither did. However, I was pleasantly surprised, and can say that the author did a fantastic job of ending in the book in a way that left me with my mouth hanging open saying, “No…No! That can’t be it!”
I can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on this book. The cover is absolutely stunning and the words are equally beautiful.

I enjoyed this sequel to Wither but not quite as much as the original. The plot lagged at points and sped too fast at others. I needed more information about pretty much everything to hold my interest. I look forward to the conclusion but wish that this novel was stronger as a stand alone volume.
Not sure which is worse: that I finished it or that I'm going ahead to read the last book in the trilogy.
So on the "Pros" list, Fever was an apropos name for this sequel to Wither. The entire book had a dreamy/hazy feel to it from sickness and drugs, and it was often not entirely clear what was happening. Ultimately, that was all right, because nothing significant really happened. Even though Rhine is out free and in society, we still don't get much more detail on the hows and whys of what made this society the way it is and how it functions at the point we see it. I am not sure whether to hope that the third book will take care of the missing pieces or not....
Wow, this book. I loved it. I loved the whole thing. It really felt as if I were reading poetry through the better part of this book which is just a credit to Lauren Destefano's writing style. It was beautiful and sad all throughout the book. I really wasn't sure that she could top that first book but she did, in my opinion.
This whole book was a roller-coaster of emotions. I was elated for Rhine and Gabriel when they got their freedom. But to have it immediately snatched away by Madame? I just could not imagine the shock Gabriel was going through realizing the crumbling world on the outside. And let me just say that this is really a dystopian society. The world is really just chaotic and falling apart. Madame's prostitute ring was so thoroughly messed up. And I'm weird, I like messed up things like that.
Maddie grew on me. Poor little Maddie. I want them to go rescue Lilac (Grace) in the next book from Madame. And I also hope that Rhine gets to see Maddie again. That little girl is just too precious even without ever saying a word.
Vaughn continued to be an awesomely evil villain. He is so super creepy, I just... cannot imagine. Rhine has every right to be terrified of him. And that he was using the blue june beans to poison her? Wow. I was so on edge when he caught up to her again and took her back to his basement. All those experiments he did on her? So terrible. And I loved how her perspective was through all of this. It made it all that more realistic and gruesome.
I loved when Linden found her and we discovered the truth, that he hadn't known she was there and what his father was doing, experimenting on people in the basement. The next book will be interesting to see what his reaction to all the truths that Rhine told him will be.
And that cliff hanger at the end! I need the third book NOW!
