It was great being back in the world of Jane, Beast, Bruiser and the rest of Yellowrock Clan. This book had some of the sweetest moments of the entire series, and also some of the funniest. It was also one of the saddest. So many feelings! I was worried that this would be the end of the series, but nope. Jane's not done with us yet!

Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock series never disappoints. Yellowrock securities has to prepare for the upcoming Sangra Duello. Along the way, a new PSLED agent tries to kill Jane and then declares that he is her brother. The local werewolf pack decides she needs to die. There is another force, possibly working with the EVs, also trying to kill her. Can she find the truth about this PSYLED agent, stop the werewolf pack, sniff out the traitor, and get everything ready for the main event?
Together with the Younger brothers, Edmund, Bruiser, and of course Beast, she has to use all of her resources to find who is trying to sabotage the Sangra Duello. The only way to keep everyone she cares about safe is to make sure the MOC, Leo, makes it through this duel.
Definitely a must read if you like this series. Has it’s up and downs, and the OMG I can’t believe that just happened. Makes you anxiously await the next book

Jane is such a complex character, a killer, a woman finding herself, a businesswoman, etc. Adding a possible brother to the mix and the arrival of the EVs makes this book non-stop action. Every book just gets better and better.

I love Jane Yellowrock. I love the whole of Clan Yellowrock. Every last one of them. Not Leo, though. Well, maybe Leo a little bit. There is no graphic sex and very little cussing since Jane doesn’t allow it. There is plenty of blood and death because without that, there would be no vampires. There is a satisfying ending, though it’s not the end of the series. I have to tell you, without a lie, I cried. The sad lasted only a blink, so don’t let that stop anyone from reading. If you are wondering about the comment above regarding Faith Hunter is best ambush hunter, that only means that I was taken by surprise
I can tell that the series is starting it’s wind down but that does not mean there are not some spectacular action scenes and conspiracies not yet explored. Jane is again in a tight spot. So tight it’s accurate to say Rock meet hardspot. She has to think quickly because this is truly “IT”. If Leo dies, then the EV Titus gets control and it will not be an easy death. Leo is kind compared to this…this…this…butthead.
The story is not mired down by descriptions and fluff that is not necessary. It’s face paced, blow your socks off incredible. Jane didn’t laugh much in this story. The vampire duel is very serious stuff. She had a lot of work to do besides the duel though. Multitasking is obviously Jane’s forte. She has a strange man showing up to blind side her with news. Ricky Bo is around and that relationship just got far more complicated. (It pleases me that he is feeling a lot of remorse for leaving Jane.) The Younger brothers are stellar as always with Alex growing into a responsible adult more and more. Bruiser is beautiful – ‘nough said. Without spoiling anything, I can simply say this book had revelations and changes to everyone’s lives. I was blindsided more than once. Also, I swear to you, Jane makes the long game vampires play seemingly easy to figure out. She is one brilliant War Woman.

4.5 (a bit slow in parts) Although the first several books were just ok (mostly because of poor editing that drove me bananas), since book 5 or 6, I have been unable to put them down! This is now a series that I will re-read over and over again.

Dark Queen
4 Stars

Series note:As each installment relies heavily on events and characters, both major and minor, from previous books, it is essential that the series be read in order. It would be impossible for new readers to come in at this point and hope to understand what is going on.

In preparation for the upcoming final release in the series (#15), I decided to re-read books #1-11 (where I had stopped). The re-read only reinforced my appreciation for Hunter's incredibly detailed world-building, sophisticated plotting and amazing characterization. The twists and turns of Dark Queen continue in this vein with the arrival of the European vampires, who plan to usurp Leo's power and enslave the city of New Orleans.

While some of the lead-up to the final confrontation is slow-going, the information is necessary, and the reward makes it all worthwhile as the gladiator-style blood challenge duels with the European vampires are both exciting and nerve-racking. The entire episode reads like a suped-up chapter from The Hunger Games with familiar characters, some beloved and others not so much, fighting for their lives.

The updates on Jane and her posse are the highlight of the book. The mix of humans, witches, vampires, weres as well as one very special Onorio, and Beast (of course) who comprise Clan Yellowrock is a true reflection of how far Jane has come from the solitary rogue-hunter at the beginning of the series. Considering the final twist at the end of this book, it appears that she will need each and every one of them in her corner.

Overall, a satisfying conclusion to this particular story arc and it will be interesting to see where Hunter takes Jane next. Wherever it is, there needs to be more Bruiser . . .

Aw crap

The end. That ending had me crying like a baby.
But seriously. No negative bits for me. So much depth of characters and.. I can’t even do this. I’m an emotional wreck after this. Just take all my stars dang it.
