Okay, you got me. I'm officially hooked. There are a lot of not good aspects and some problematic aspects, but the entertainment is there. This is what I imagine it feels like to watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or something. Maybe the Bachelor. I never got into trashy drama filled reality TV so maybe now I can embrace trashy NA terribly written fantasy romance books.

Glad to see the writing did improve a little as the book went on, but it should've gone through another round or two of editing + proofreading imo. The incorrect use of em dashes and ellipses drove me a bit insane the first third of the book before I just became numb to it. But at this point, I will put the garbage writing aside for the entertainment factor.

I have to acknowledge that this is not a good fantasy book (arguably not a good book in general). The world building is lacklustre at best and we don't get any answers until the last eighth of the story. Not to mention the supreme lack of effort surrounding names and language. It's also terribly predictable and full of typical tropes but like...I'm kinda okay with it because I was entertained. It may be trash but I want to know what happens.

All I have to say is
Darklina walked so Cas and Poppy could RUN. I saw that coming a mile away.

This was my first JLA book and while this isn't the best book I've ever read, but it was engaging and held my attention long enough to read it in about three days. There were lots of twists and turns that i didn't see coming and I really enjoyed reading this. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

It’s not groundbreaking literature, but I like the story and plot twists. I’m a sucker for this fantasy trope and I liked the outcome. My only issue is that she deals with like grossly unnecessary physical abuse and the people who inflict it upon her are just whatever characters. Also there’s a LOT of internal dialogue, like this book is 50% internal thoughts. It’s a lot. But I still liked it lol.

Okay, this book has a lot of hype and I think my expectations were just too high for what it is. It was easily readable and I flew through it and immediately wanted to read the sequel. The characters were okay--I liked a lot of the side characters. I didn't think Poppy had much development; she's basically the same person at the end as she is at the beginning
she just has more freedom
. And Hawke...the ultimate bad boy? Idk. I both hate and like him
much like Poppy?
and honestly just don't know what to make of him. The romance was a bit too much for me, but that is definitely my fault because I didn’t realize this is fantasy romance, which is a little different than just fantasy.

The plot kinda bounces around in pace, picking up just when you're about to get bored. The world itself was interesting, though a lot of things are left unexplained. I had trouble deciding how to rate this one--it did entertain me but will it stick with me in the long run? Nope, I highly doubt it. Have I already read the sequel? Yes, because I have no control when it comes to cliffhanger endings! Am I wishing I had just waited for my library hold to come in instead of buying the ebooks? Yep...

Read if you like: Twilight, paranormal romance, morally gray (arguably immoral) characters.

I went into this book knowing almost nothing about it other than how much people have been raving about it online.

So lemme tell you I was a little shocked at the supernatural aspects but honestly it brought me back to my 2010 reading roots.

It was pretty predictable - but the karma added in made it a lot more enjoyable than other predictable books in the same genre. I also rolled my eyes a couple of times at decisions made and at certain scenes.

So in short, this book gave me a lot of mixed feelings but honestly I had a great time and I’m gonna read the next one. Probably tomorrow, who’s to say.
