I read this in high school, it took me awhile to read and I struggled in places but I really really loved it. I’ve only given it 4 stars because at the time there were things I could not understand purely based on my age, and I believe if I read it again I will love it even more. If you like history, murder mysteries, philosophy and human darkness you’ll like this. It is a big book and can be intimidating but have fun with it and take it slow.

I knew this was a masterpiece but I hadn't tried to read it until now. I barely remember the 80s movie based on the story. I was attracted by its mix of dark ages historic background and its true crime vibes.
After reading it I can say it is a perfectly crafted novel that combines the engagement of a thriller with much deeper history, psychology and philosophy.
The pace of the writing is based on the daily routines of a monk abbey gives a real sense of immersion into the medieval universe 🕍
A must-read

I generally dislike when a worldview is being heavy-handedly hammered into the recipient, which is why I dislike this book, and why I dislike George Carlin. Having fond memories of Foucalt's pendulum I went in with great expectations, but unfortunately this book is based on the familiar but IMO overused trope that you should let 'love' trump anything else, and it's not even trying to nuance the concept of love, but simply assumes that infatuation is the same as love. Then it moves into the familiar territory of equating the church with repression of said 'love' without even stopping to ask why the church might do something like that. From Eco I expected a better and more nuanced treatment.

Fabulously written. Mesmerizing. Very interesting to hear the discussions of the various heresies - their similarities & differences & how the church reacted. Also takes places during the Babylonian Captivity in Avignon & before the rival pope was set up. They thought the world was ending. What would they think today?
Murder mystery is intriguing, not too in depth or sophisticated, but the reasoning & aftermath are beyond anything I had read before.
