I just don’t think this book was for me. The ecological elements were not interesting to me. I thought the depictions and discussions of nature would be more like Thoreau. There were some parts I really enjoyed, but those were far and few between. Maybe I’ll try again in a couple of years when I have the time to really give it a chance.

Beautifully drawn characters, with the landscape and ecosystem somehow a character in itself. Barbara Kingsolver manages to create an almost oppressively intimate atmosphere through her vivid descriptions of the smells, sounds, sensations. I somehow felt muddled about whether the three stories were contemporaneous or not, which was distracting, but otherwise an absorbing and thought provoking read.

Joyfully outstanding. I love Barbara Kingsolver.

I tried to get into this and I just could not. It's not at all like The Poisonwood Bible, which I remember really liking.

I have been carrying this book around with me for over a decade and without question, it was the right time to dive in. I could never have appreciated this book, in the same way, before living in rural NC. While still a newbie to the south eastern appalachian region, these stories gave me insight to the landscape and culture that enhanced the wonder and awe I have already come to experience.
Kinsolver’s character development is some of the finest I have ever known. While the book moved slow at times, I continued to be curious of the people and all creation I walked alongside of throughout the journey.

The most deliciously humid and lusty summer book. Feels like the rural towns and forests of the eastern U.S. in July

Another great Kingsolver - making me see things in new light (prey vs predator hunting, food chain and eco importance), while characters got me invested and pulled me in
