This was much better than Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. This book was farm-based fiction: stories set in Appalachia that ultimately link to each other. I liked some better than others but overall I did enjoy it. I like the earthiness of Kingsolver's writing; you can feel the soil, the sun, the dampness of the woods.
I'm kind of over this whole trope of women in STEM who are NoT liKe OtHeR gIrLs and have a persecution complex from Other Women. Deanna is so beautiful despite living in the forest and not wearing makeup or having access to bodywax and Lusa is aggressively hated on by all her sisters-in-law because she's educated and likes bugs. I mean. Since when was it enough to have female characters be defined by what they're not instead of what they are? Why do we have to tear other women and their tastes/ choices down just to build others up? It's basic. Nobody's after you for liking coyotes and bugs. Nannie and Garnett were the best thing about this book, I wish I just read their chapters and skipped the rest.
You'll love this book if you love Where the Crawdads Sing and other books like that.

This is an absolute love letter to Appalachia and I’m obsessed. It also has really poignant experiences of grief, loss, and connection. Simply beautiful
Well, wish that I was still reading this book! Thoroughly satisfying on so many levels of my interests!

It's been years, but I read it with my Korean Book Club and I remember liking the story very much. I loved being able to feel like I was right in the area of the farms.
