This is a book where I think context matters, and knowing why Colleen Hoover decided to write a story featuring abuse as a major plot point. A worthwhile read, and also one where content warnings at the start of the book would be helpful.

I did not like this book. It was really upsetting regarding domestic violence and sexual assault coming from a loved one.

Wow. This is a gut wrenching story. It is told in a way that teaches us about domestic violence and how to be strong and overcome.

This book was really sad :( it made me love Ryle and then put me in Lily’s viewpoint on wanting to forgive him even though what he did was horrible. Colleen Hoover definitely did a wonderful job depicting her own mother’s relationship to help others empathize with abused women/people.

I worried at first that this book would turn out to be another standard romance novel. It has all the hallmarks. The lead male is rich and hot. The lead female is hot and struggling to find her footing in life. It's cliche but fortunately well-written enough to keep you going.

The story takes a turn into less explored territory when abuse enters the plot. The reader gets a front row seat to the inner thoughts of an abused woman and the reasons why she chooses to stay.

The writing was solid and the story keeps you interested. On the topic of abuse, it seemed a bit soft. At the end of the book, Hoover explains that she didn't intend it to look like any specific experience. That said, the ending represents more of an ideal that many abuse victims would like to experience rather than the harsh reality many face. The hard truth is that abusers rarely recognize or admit their abuse.

It is definitely worth reading and will keep you interested to the end, though it could be more original.
