If I thought I had a lot of Bail Organa feelings before this book, whoooh boy I had no idea.
- en español debajo :) -
This was my first time reading a Star Wars novel, and I was pleasantly surprised: I enjoyed this book a lot. It's been sitting on my shelf for at least two years, and I finally read it. I have to say, you need at least basic knowledge about the Star Wars universe to enjoy this, if you don't have it, this book is probably not for you. But if you do, I encourage you to read it.
First of all, I've liked getting to know Bail and Breha Organa, and I was really surprised by the appearance of characters that I wasn't expecting, Getting to know how the rebellion started and how Leia started being involved at such an early age was truly interesting. If you're familiar with the movies, you probably know how the book is going to end, but it doesn't matter because the author knows how to narrate the book in a way that you don't exactly know how the characters are gonna get to that point.
I loved that the teenage romance is a subplot and that the book focuses mainly on Leia. Other characters felt a little flat too, that's why I haven't given this book 5 stars. Also, the first 40% of the book is kinda slow-paced, that's why it's taken me so long to finish it, but once you're past that point, a lot of things start happening and the pace is a little faster, which made me enjoy it a lot more. In my opinion, it's a book worth reading, and I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author!

However, I have to say that I didn't empathize with Kier that much, and his death didn't really affect me....

A great "start" to the Star Wars series. A must read for Leia fans. It's great to see Leia being a bad ass from the beginning.

Edit 5/4/21: Happy May the 4th!! Highly recommend this novel for any Star Wars fan!

Claudia Gray might be my favorite Star Wars author. I loved this little look into Princess Leia's history.
I loved learning the history of Princess Leia and Alderaan. Especially since there isn't much said about it in the movies... I liked that Leia had to earn her crown as princess and that she really seems set on helping the entire universe rather than just her planet. I liked that she was so innocent and really kinda learned how awful the world is through her earnest experiences. That carries over into the films, I think.
I liked learning about Bail and Breha too. We really never got to know them well and this was an interesting look into the leadership of the rebellion. All of Leia's relationships were well developed and interesting and it really gave an insight to who Leia is and how she grew up.
The only part I wasn't a fan of was a huge spoiler so DO NOT READ unless you want to be majorly spoiled:
Overall, this was a great novel and I'm glad it's canon! I'm also reading the manga and I'm so excited to see how this will look in the future novels!

I didn't like that Kier was going to betray them. His reasoning was weak; I'd completely expect the Empire to destroy Alderaan rather than reform it. I think he would have brought the destruction of his planet if he had succeeded in betraying them. I think his character was a scapegoat and his only purpose is to be Leia's first love. It was frustrating and the weakest part of the novel.Overall, this was a great novel and I'm glad it's canon! I'm also reading the manga and I'm so excited to see how this will look in the future novels!

It is easy for a Star Wars book to be liked by me, since, you know, it's Star Wars, but I refuse to rate a book 5 stars if it isn't really good.
Apart from the fact that it was very well written (there wasn't a dull moment), I think Claudia Gray nailed the character, and it made me like Leia even more. The side characters were very loveable as well, and I found a whole new appreciation for Amilyn Holdo, who was alright in the movies, but amazing in this book. Of course, I had to cry at the end, but that's what usually happens when I read a book with Leia in it (I don't know why that is? Probably because her life is really miserable. I guess that's the Skywalker curse.)
