Wow! I absolutely loved this book. The characters were so relatable and the story was extremly gripping. This my first time reading a book about mental health and it definitely took me by surprise. 5/5 stars.

I must admit, I didn't see that coming, like at all. So the story revolved around a 16-year-old Evelyn (or Evie, as they called her), who had been struggling with severe OCD. She was just coming off her meds and she should be fine. She went to college, her only best friend at the time, Jane, found a boyfriend, Joel, and she felt left behind, forced to shape a friendship with his best mate, Guy. Then she met Lottie and Amber and became instant best friends.

They came up with some feminism ideas, creating their own feminist club, The Spinster Club. As the story went, Evie met two guys, Ethan and then Oli; two people with issues that she thought was too much to handle, seeing that she had her own OCD to care for. Then, there's Guy, and her family. She was confused and pressured by the idea of being "normal" and she eventually relapsed and in denial. Then, the plot thickened and twisted. I was in so deep, burying my nose in the book, smiling my face off.... *Sigh* I just wasn't ready.

It had a happy ending, but not the kind of happy ending I was half expecting. Such an exciting read. Wish I'd picked up this book much sooner. Look forward to read the other 3 books. ✌

How do I even begin to talk about a book that means the absolute world to me?
I think I'm going to have to do a whole video on this book and my relationship to it because this book is just so, so important to me. <3

Following a girl with OCD and being ashamed of her illness, it's so real. Mental health matters and this book is sooo real and necessary.

So I didn't love this book AS much as It Only Happens in the Movies, but honestly???? How could I??? When that was clearly a perfect book??

However, this book was still pretty damn good, for the following reasons:
- excellent mental health rep
- feminist af (although it wasn't always my idea of a perfect feminism)
- central relationship = female friendship

There was altogether too much boy stuff in here for my liking, and while I get the point of its inclusion it was still UNPLEASANT TO READ. Also I just didn't click as much with these characters.

Still, I think it's safe to say...

Drumroll please...

HOLLY BOURNE IS AN AUTO-BUY AUTHOR.

What a time to be alive.

shoutout to me for reading one (1) good contemporary from an author I think could be a new favorite and being so surprised by my own optimism that I instantly have to pick another one of her books up

Bad stuff happens, people are mean, there are no steps you can take that ensure the world leaves you alone. All you can do is try not to be one of those people who contributes to the bad.

This is probably the first book dealing heavily with mental health issues that I didn’t find that difficult to read. And I feel like that part was done really well. I also liked Evie’s friendship with Lottie and Amber, they were super cute and supportive. However, this is very much a YA novel at its core, and the dating drama annoyed me to no end. But I did like how that all wrapped up, though.

As someone who has recently got into reading UKYA books, Holly Bourne is an author who I have heard so much about yet until now, I had never picked up any of her books. When I saw Am I Normal Yet? in Foyles, I immediately picked it up and I started reading it on the tube. As soon as I came back from London, I picked it back up again and read the rest of it in one afternoon.

Evie suffers from OCD but at the start of the book, she is getting better therefore as she is starting college, she decides she wants to be a normal teenager which includes getting a proper friendship group and a boyfriend. The book basically follows her journey as she goes through this process of becoming ‘normal’ and I completely loved it.
