Georgie and Darcy are finally married, and he has surprised her with plans for a honeymoon in Kenya. The queen asks Georgie to keep an eye on David while she's there. Although David has been on a tour of the colonies, the queen is very nervous since Wallis Simpson's divorce has gone through. She wants to be certain they don't sneak away to marry. Meanwhile, it appears that Darcy might have had more on his mind than romance when he planned the trip. Apparently he's been asked to look out for a jewel thief.
Once in Kenya Georgie finds she's not just up against a "the American" and a jewel thief. There are swarming ants that can kill a person, illegal drugs, nazis, overly amorous neighbors, unconventional house parties, and a murderer. Can she and Darcy solve the mysteries, still enjoy their honeymoon in this beautiful country and stay alive?
As always I'm thrilled with the latest in the Her Royal Spyness series. Rhys Bown always writes interesting characters and provides a great sense of place and time.
This book felt exceptionally well researched and she even provided a list of sources in the back for those interested in learning more.

I loved the change in setting and that Georgie and Darcy are finally married. However, Georgies sure, no nonsense, brave voice and personality seemed lacking in this installment. She seemed petulant, whiny and demanding. This series is one of my favorite audible listens and I don’t know if it is just the change in narration or if it’s a difference in the writing. It was enjoyable, just not as charming as the earlier books in the series.
The main characters were the same. The author was the same, yet this didn't feel like one of Georgiana's adventures. There was so much less humor, and the urge by Bowen to get the historical details right made the novel wrong. The plot wasn't so well presented. The relationship between Georgiana and Darcy so unlike newlyweds and the red herrings were annoyingly unconvincing.
I hope she doesn't obsess so much about historical accuracy in her future books and return to the fun of her previous books.

Wasn't as bad as most of the others have been.
I actually hadn't read any of the other books in the series, but I was able to pick this one up just fine. The author gave a very thoughtful note at the beginning about historical context, and it seemed to me the world was very carefully drawn. That said, it did take some time before the action really started, and even longer before the murder. And then the wrap-up was a bit abrupt. Nonetheless, I enjoyed our narrator very much, and this was a fun vacation read!
4 stars for the first 3/4 of the book.
1 star for the last 2 chapters.
I think this makes the review 2.75 stars or something.
Georgie and Darcy are on their honeymoon in Kenya. English settlers in Kenya in the 1930s are not PC, to say the least. A few of the reviewers on here disliked the book because it offends their modern sensibilities. I believe in historical context. Characters act appropriately for the time period. I can appreciate that, even if I don't agree with or am horrified by their beliefs or actions.
Having said that, I enjoyed the book right up until the end. I have no idea what happened. The ending is completely rushed, as if Bowen felt compelled to turn in a book at a deadline, rather than take the time to write the story properly. How the hell did Georgie figure out who the murderer was? Who was trying to kill her and Darcy, and why? If there's going to be a substantial portion of the book spent on about these events, the least an author do is explain or resolve them in a satisfactory manner. That doesn't happen here, AT ALL. Georgie and Darcy swan back to England and go on with their lives as if nothing happened. Very disappointing.

Cozy mystery, interesting setting for Georgie to go to colonial Africa. Not too surprising, but a nice way to pass the time. I'm really sick of the Wallace Simpson subplot, and Georgie needs to grow up a bit and stop being "Oh Golly - I'm so naïve".
