First of all, how dare you??!
When the story is so strong you hated it the whole time but had to give it 5 stars.
I may never recover.

I liked it but it was also very heartbreaking.

This would have been a 5 for me had there been more closure. Otherwise it is exactly what I have come to expect from this series. A peek inside the Queendom of the past, a little more insight into the Oracle and War gifts.

This was such a good back story on some of the historical elements of the Three Dark Crowns saga but WOW am I SO mad at some of these characters. A testament to good writing, in my books (excuse the pun).

I feel bad for Elsabet and all the future oracle queens born. If it wasn't for her foster brother, she may have had a chance to see the prophecy that would save her from Francesca and Sonia's machinations (mostly Francesca Arron). And if she had saved herself, then all future queens born with the sight would not be killed at birth.

It just shows that the Arrons are the bad seeds of this series, just like it was the Mind-Whisperers in the Red Queen books. I really hope that Elsabet's true story comes out in the main series and she is cleared of Francesca's sins and that the Arron family falls and loses all power.

I love the Three Dark Crown series, and I have to wait until fall for the next book, so I was excited to pick up this novella. It tells an interesting tale set about 500 years before the events of TDC and ODT, when the last oracle queen sat the throne. Elsabet is gifted with the sight, but even this power cannot illuminate the treachery of her Council. She goes against tradition, trying to rule her way, and this rubs many Council members, including Francesca Arron (ancestor of Natalia), who plots against the queen.

I like Kendare Blake's writing style, so I enjoyed this novella. It was also interesting to learn more about oracle queens, since by the events of TDC/ODT, no queen born with the sight gift are allowed to live past infancy. V. excited for Two Dark Reigns in a few more months!

Just a little snippet into why the island always feared Oracle Queens. I really liked it and feel like this novella added texture to that world.
