I didn't hate this book but I really don't see what all the 5 star reviews were about either. It was just ok for me, maybe a little too weird. I wasn't athletic in high school so I guess I don't really understand the whole coach relationship, it just seems that the relationship between Coach and these cheerleaders was a little over the top. I'll agree that the second half of the book was better than the first, and the whodunit factor was a bit surprising, but I didn't like this book enough to give it any recommendations.

Imagine if Legs in Foxfire had been an evil, psychopath cheerleader, and her darling Maddy had gotten too close with the Coach and Legs got angry. Throw in murder mystery, and you have Dare Me. Tough, nasty, strong and skinny, these girls would certainly please Sue Sylvester.
While the book does have lovely, literary and lyrical language, this tale is plot-based and the plot fell flat. It's really a whodunit and might have been more successful if it had dwelled more in the characters. It was enjoyable to read, but the end was a real disappointment.

Upon starting this book I was almost immediately hooked in and was reading for hours on end. Although the ending was kind of meh, overall I think it’s a pretty great book.

I would give it three and a half stars if allowed... I really enjoyed this book, but I didn't LOVE it. This was a part mystery/suspense and part coming-of-age novel. It centers around high school cheerleaders (which would not normally lead me to pick it up, but it was a gift from my brother and his books are always interesting at the least). This is a dark, tense book and the descriptions of the cheer aspects fit remarkably well to both parallel the other aspects of the story and to propel the tale forward.

Good psychological thriller. Written from a teenagers perspective so uses language that they use which means there is profanity so beware!
The ending will getcha!

"Beth or Coach, who do I believe when one never tells the truth and one gives me nothing but riddles?"
Dare Me is the tale of a reliable narrator caught between a friend and a mentor, which at once has a psychological bent to it before unveiling itself as pure black noir albeit subverted to take place from the perspective of a 17 year old cheerleader. The prologue tells us as much as Addy is summoned to an apartment by someone to confirm somebody is dead.
I previously tried reading this one, but it never connected with me, but having recently read Queenpin by the same author I felt I understood more what this was striving for. There is a part in the middle of the novel where things appear slightly formless and not seeming to go anywhere, but once you get through this it explodes into a fast paced noir mystery.
The above quote kind of displays where things go with you never knowing quite what to believe. Another strong book from Abbott, who I am now seeing why she is so revered in the Crime fiction community.
