Enjoyed this book a lot but way too many teen pregnancies, and WHY DO THE LESBIANS ALWAYS HAVE TO DIE Other than they, very good. Love the world, and extremely well written. Samantha Shannon is an incredibly talented writer.

I first read Priory over 2 years ago and I loved the story. I felt no intimidation at seeing the size of the novel as I knew from experience that a story worthy of being read can be told and not lose my interest. This was the case for Priory and this was the case for A Day of Fallen Night.
Once again, this was a story majestically woven through multiple POVs that I couldn’t stop thinking about. I was excited to read a little bit everyday that I could.
I absolutely loved Priory, and while I found nothing wrong with it, I cannot help but notice that A Day of Fallen Night was even better. Everything flowed seamlessly and the characters felt more fleshed out and engaging.
A story about connection and motherhood. This theme woven throughout the different stories that are intertwined deeper than we expect.
And I love love love how much queerness is in this book and how it is not scorned.
Here are a few quotes:
It was two hearts meeting at a cross way, and deciding to go on together.
She was born to be a shadow, and all shadows had to do was walk behind.
The silence was a living thing, a thing that ached.

While I loved the characters and Samantha seriously ripped my MF heart out in this book the book felt very much like the pacing was off. The pov changes in the first 2/3 of it were very jarring and took me out of the flow every time. Glorian and Wulf were my absolute favorite characters. Their friendship and connection felt genuine. Not to mention how much of a BAMF Glorian is. She's so scared but still stands up for her people in the most meaningful ways
I remember when Priory first came out being delighted by the world building and character development but wishing, despite the massive size of the book, that it had been made into a series allowing the storylines to build and intertwine more meaningfully… well here we have it! An expansion that uses the carefully built world of the priory to tell a twisting and wildly enjoyable court drama across regions with new seeds of magic. I’m glad I didn’t reread priory first as this is a prequel and I couldn’t remember details of the history of priory and got to just be absorbed for the ride. So glad this world continues to be expanded and shared.
