in a way, i was a bit disappointed by this. it was a bit cliché and predictable in a lot of ways, and i guessed many of the "plot-twists". but i am glad that i read it! daunis was such a good character, and i absolutely loved granny june! another reason why i rated it quite low is that it was a bit too slow in some places, and that ended putting me in a reading slump :/

I learned so much while reading this beautifully written novel. Although thrillers are not my favorite genre, I'm really glad I picked up this book. Even though the plot didn't grab me until the last hundred pages, I felt deeply connected to the characters and the themes that were explored. Angeline Boulley's approach to discuss difficult and mature topics (such as racism towards Native Americans, drug (ab-)use, grief, generational trauma) was very nuanced without downplaying the horrors people had to go through.
This book left a strong impression on me and I assume that it will follow me for some time.

Holy! This is one of those books where you stay up late into the night to finish, once you’ve gotten deep enough into the plot. Although it is fictional, it gives you a genuine look at the pain and injustices that exist in Native American communities, all while also showing the love, resiliency, and community care that keeps them going.

I love love this book. Honestly I’m trying to put my thoughts together cause there is so much to unpack in this book.

As a non-native - in a way (I know it’s fiction) I learned a lot and feel like I was given some insight on their culture and some of the challenges they encounter.

There is so much to say but seriously just read it and check trigger warnings.

*********

PS: I only gave it 4.75 cause I did not enjoy the relationship between the main character and her mom.

📖 Daunis Fontaine a 18 ans.

Eighteen-year-old Daunis was meant for great things; unfortunately, an injury and a family tragedy have required her to stay in her small hometown. With a white mother and an Ojibwe father, she feels a constant sense of both belonging and distance in her community. Integrating Ojibwemowin with English, this crime thriller is lyrical and suspenseful. It’s one of the most stunning books I’ve read this year.
