this is probably the least romantic romcom ever, but it's hilariously hyperreal for that reason and totally of its time, in a way that is charming and not too kitschy. the diary set-up worked amazingly and gave the overarching narrative a kind of episodic, sitcom-esque feel that kept me thoroughly entertained throughout. took off a star because I was highly disappointed with the rushed and nonsensical ending. But the rest of this book? Pure gold. A little warning, though: this is not a shiny, polished tale of the stereotypical (and in real life, extremely rare) uptown and sophisticated south-English thirtysomething. It's an incredibly and often shamefully honest portrayal of a woman who likes sex and cigarettes and drinking and her foul-mouthed friends

Considering this was a re-read of Bridget Jones’s Diary (when I originally rated it 5 stars!) I was really surprised to not like it that much this time around.
I found Bridget and her friends to be really whiney and unbearable, and frankly too entitled to be relatable.
A lot of the time I wanted to scream at Bridget to sort her life out and stop messing around! How can you go on like that!?
I felt sorry for Mark Darcy for putting up with a lot of it!
I’ll keep reading the series because I want to see the difference between the books and the films, but I don’t think it’ll be a binge-reading situation!

Get me out of here
Graphic: Eating disorder
All the characters were extremely annoying, Bridget clearly has an eating disorder (which I didn't know from the film), and it was just generally not very enjoyable to read.
The film is much better, I wish I hadn't bothered reading this.

Sometimes you just need a book that makes you laugh.
Funny but completely pointless. I respect the author's talent for humor and that's why this isn't getting 1 star. I just couldn't like this book-- I wanted to, but I found Bridget unbearably obnoxious. Contrary to what the cover says, Bridget Jones is definitely not me. Or anyone I'd want to associate with. Her low self-esteem was probably the most rattling thing about this book for me. It was such a disempowering stance for women that I actually felt a misplaced anger towards her character. To compare this to Pride & Prejudice, which has the willful strong female lead Elizabeth Bennet, is laughable. One of the rarer instances where the movie is far better.
