I love when a heavy theme is so carefully presented. Also, dragons

I want to like this book so bad but it was so difficult to get through. As I listened to the audiobook, the closer it got to being done, the more irritated I became because the story was going nowhere. There were points in the book that piqued my interest but it fizzled quickly. I couldn’t relate or get a grasp of any of the characters. And all of the mythological creatures mentioned are glossed over with no time for the reader to get a sense of them. The dialogue between the human characters dragged on and on and didn’t amount to anything. I enjoyed the ending (in a “what the…”???? Sort of way) but it all felt like a long time to get to that result.

I don't think I'm clever enough to get everything here but very thought-provoking. Do civilisations and long-term relationships work better if we forget the bad things that happened in the past? Maybe some parts of the story and the use of allegory is deliberately vague to reinforce the key theme? Set in a middle ages England something like a politer Game of Thrones world.

Sadly, this was not my favorite. If you're an Ishiguro fan you should still read it, but if you're new you should start with Never Let Me Go or Remains of the Day. The story follows an elderly couple in medieval England as they journey through their country in search of their son. They compete with a magical, memory-erasing fog, and wander in fear of a dragon that haunts their part of the world. I KNOW. It sounds like there should be lots of action and fun, but it is slow-moving, and not in the good, butler kind of way. Ishiguro adopted a more era-appropriate writing style that got in my way more than anything. The ending still brought me to tears, and hit me with a kind of sadness, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Lento, gris, frío, húmedo. Nunca pensé que se podía hacer realismo mágico que te hiciera querer cortarte las venas.

Aún así hay ideas interesantes y partes del argumento te dejan pensando.
