I'm thoroughly enjoying re-reading these books this year. I really want to read up more on wolves now. I'll have to look for some non-fiction books at the library.

When I first picked this one up, the intelligent animals bothered me and I put it back down. I have a thing against talking animals, okay? I hate them.
But my mother read it and convinced me to give it another go, and I'm glad I did. Tamora Pierce is like a good cup of tea. There aren't any surprises, but it's comforting and pleasant. The plot is fun, the characters are clear, and it's an enjoyable experience to read. And, since they're on the younger end of YA, they're fast!

Loved this book! It's the perfect continuation of the first book without being repetitive, had good themes to it, and included new but just as lovable characters. As an animal lover that really rather BE an animal at this point, I ADORE Diane!

2011 Review
One of the interesting ideas presented in this series is what would animals think about what humans do if we could ask them. I also really like the subtle integration of the concept that no one is totally good or totally evil by nature, but individual choices are what make a person (or creature, in this case) bad or good.

Not digging the run-up to Our Hero eventually having a romance with her Older Mentor Figure. Otherwise, lovely.

I love the action scenes and the way the Immortals come into play as characters/races (species?). Pierce deals with the animal voices so well and their speech was a main source of humor throughout the book. Their natures were developed by their unique speech patterns so that readers could understand how wolves/eagels/marmots/etc behaved on their own. My favorite parts were when the animals made our human expressions their own. The plot is fast paced and I could hardly resist the temptation not to finish it in one day.
