This book feels like an adventure within an adventure series. Daine goes to the help of the wolf pack who took her in when bandits killed her family and uncovers a plot against the crown. She meets up with friends along the way and they try to stop the plot.
Ok. I'm beginning to wonder how Pierce will mature this arc. Daine almost has god-like abilities at this point. Everything comes so easy to her and it seems like she never has to sacrifice anything or live with consequences of any missteps (which feels very different from Pierce's Alanna quartet). I'm hoping the third and fourth installments really start advancing the Carthaki plot against Tortall, and I hope we begin to see some of Diane's limitations or faults.
At this point I'm committed to finishing the series, but on the whole it's been a disappointment thus far.

3.5. This iteration of Daine's story was much better than the first one. I really like the moral points Pierce is making. I find the characters a little less personally connecting than those of Alanna's and Kel's stories.

Weirdly, for a book called "Wolf-Speaker", there were not enough wolves! The focus was much more on dealings with plots by humans and with immortal beings like the basilisk. I really liked the scenes in which Daine entered the minds of animals, and started shape-shifting, but I found that the magical discoveries were eclipsed by a complicated treason plots that weren't so interesting. Still love Daine though, and want to continue this series!
I think this is the slowest book in the series, but it is nice to read about Daine, with very little Numair in the book. Daine heads out to deal with her old wolf-pack and help them solve a dilemma in their new valley. This book also introduces Tkaa, who is probably my favorite character in the Tortall books.
