“Every broken person’s worst fear—that no one will be able to love us in spite of our scars.”

This was an emotional and heart wrenching story. I loved the first half of the book. Reading about Jess, Ava, and Gabe's childhood, how they were like siblings, and how Gabe and Jess became a couple. The book follows their budding relationship, and then BAM. A tragedy happens, and Jess breaks things off, thus ripping my heart out. Jess leaves for North Carolina for an internship. She meets Landon, who is a police officer. I didn't particularly like Landon. I thought he was an egotistical ass. The only redeeming thing about him, was how he pointed out to Jess that she was still in love with Gabe. I am happy this book got the ending, I was rooting for.

I don't know if it was intentional or it was my inner monologue, but the first 38% of the novel I spent on the edge of my seat waiting for the other shoe to drop. As a matter of fact, I immediately put the book down last night at the height of that feeling because it was late as all get out and I knew that it my hunch was correct, I would be kicking my own butt in the morning from my bookover that I would have (you know-- when you stay up way too late because you just have to read one more chapter).
I woke up this morning and just thought, the story of Gabe and Jess is just too good to be true. I wasn't sure what was going to happen, but I had emotionally prepared myself for it.

The good news is that I loved the characters-- all of them, but especially Jess, Gabe, and Landon. The characters were developed, flawed but loyal, and interesting. My favorite character would probably have to be Landon-- the one you learn the least about, but never fear! He has his own line of the series.

The story was real and raw, painful at times, but never to the point that the story was too much or insensitive towards the characters and the situation.

I would really recommend this story for someone who is looking for a love story. There are some slight triggers to violence in the story.

*****SPOILERS******

Oh, I shed some tears on this one. My word, I loved Gabe. And then, I loved Landon. I didn't think I could love them both, but I did. I was so happy to see Jess recover and find herself again after all she had been through. I think they dealt with the rape in a way a lot of people do. Sometimes running is what you feel your only option is. I think them not finding her attacker is a whole lot more like real life then everything being wrapped up in the end. Most rapists are not ever found. This author really made me love these characters and I found myself with tears in my eyes so often. But in the end, it is a beautiful love story and I'm happy they are together and that in love at the end. I see that Landon has his own story now and I can't wait to read it. I wanted to dislike him immensely after loving Gabe's character so much. But after him doing what is best for Jess despite his own feelings for her, I had to love him too. Especially after he called Gabe when she didn't seem to be able too. Great book, I'd definitely recommend this one.

For some reason, I truly enjoy reading dedication pages and the one for Unbreakable truly spoke to my heart. Read what Rebecca says:

One of my favorite authors, Michelle Leighton wrote, "Every broken person's worst fear - that no one will be able to love us in spite of our scars." This book is dedicated to anyone who has ever been broken. You are loved - scars and all.

I met Rebecca at a book signing in Cleveland back in April and I am kicking myself that it took me so long to begin this series. Jess is a piece of work. Her dad is basically a deadbeat dad because he is so preoccupied with his career that she thinks of her neighbors as family more than him. She is secretly in love with Gabe, but he is slightly older and her best friend's brother. Oh, and he's one of the neighbor's kids. Jess thinks it is a one-sided crush until a trip to see Gabe at college.

True to form with this genre, Gabe also has a crush on Jess. I am so over the "insta-love, I am secretly in love with my friend's sibling" storyline, but to my surprise that was my only negative about this book. The ups, downs, trials, and tribulations that Jess and Gave experience are for the record books. But, when the unexpected happens, it rocks them to the core and we truly get to see if their bond is truly unbreakable.

Their story is told in alternating POV's so I found myself attached to both Gabe and Jess. The first word that comes to mind when I think of this book is heartbreaking, But, makes this book exceptional is Shea's ability to turn something that is quite horrific into a story of triumph. The ending left me hanging so I moved right on to Undone!!!

Plot had potential, particularly with it being such a sensitive topic, but the characters were not at all believable. Gabe's conversations with Jess were eye roll worthy. No one talks like that. Landon was an overbearing jerk and totally creepy. He barged into her apartment and refused to leave after she told him she didn't want him there multiple times. Whatever happened to "No means no!" Then he sleeps there overnight and sneaks up to her room in the morning and watches her sleep. How is this guy supposed to be anything other than a creep? Jess was "the epitome of perfect?" Please.

I did appreciate the rape hotline information at the end of the book.

I got it for free and I'm glad I didn't pay anything for it.

Sorry if there are any spoilers. I don't often write reviews, however, I'm feeling compelled to after reading Unbreakable. I've learned not to expect TOO too much from YA novels. This book is a prime example of why. I rate this book a 2.5, although I gave it a 3 to be generous. There was so much room for the story to be SO much better than it was. It could have gone much deeper and dealing with the very real issues that it was, it just seemed too unrealistic. Jess was too flighty and Gabe was a bit psycho stalkerish. Landon was pig headed and I don't like how the story skipped right over how he turned from being a total arrogant jerk into being in love with Jess. Also, what the heck happened to Landon and his sister? There are several references to the messed up stuff that happened to them, but the book never actually says what or explains why Landon is the way he is. The story left loose ends and didn't flow. It jumps from one thing to another in the same paragraph. Besides all this, the main thing that drove me nuts was the terrible grammar and punctuation. Commas in the middle of sentences, occasionally not even using quotations when people were speaking, and my number one pet peeve: I can't even tell you how many times the word "too" was used where it should have been "to". Seriously??? How did this book even get published like this?? I could give it the benefit of the doubt and hope that since I read this on my kindle, whoever created the kindle version just didn't proof read or something. But jeeze. Kinda made me wish I didn't take a chance and waste my $2.99 on this book. Blah.
