The most personal--and perhaps the best--Brene Brown book yet.

People I respect who work in diversity and social justice in tech recommended Brené Brown's work. I chose this book rather than Daring Greatly (her work on vulnerability) because the book jacket said that she took up failure and disappointment in meaningful way. Most of the time, I feel okay about my own failures, but sometimes I get sidelined by my emotions, especially disappointment, anger, and grief. I was looking for strategies to reign in my emotions without numbing myself by "compartmentalizing" or ignoring emotions.
I'm not going to say that this book is a panacea for coping with those emotions, but Brené (fuck it, we're on a first name basis) provides a narrative framework (the Rising Strong process-->practice) that I think can help me and likely be helpful for others too. There's a lot of granola, dig-your-toes-into-the-sands-of-life prose, but I think that's what makes it accessible, enjoyable, and ultimately helpful.
The less crunchy among us might be less interested in the breadth of stories and prose. I would recommend the introductory chapters, the final chapter, as well as the chapter on Andrew and dealing with failure at work. Crunchy folks will enjoy the whole book. :)

This was the first book I've read by this author and it took me a while to get used to her style, but as a fellow Texas-Ex I was thrilled when I found my groove!

Brown gives us new tools to examine our self thoughts in an accessible and light-hearted way. She provides practical and real world examples of people falling into their pit (or "under a rock") and how they're able to rally with their families and friends to understand each other better and help each other rise.

I can't wait to get my hands on Brown's other books. She is inspiring, heartwarming, and rooted in decades of research.

How we get back up and go on after we fall is the subject of PhD and Shame Researcher Brene Brown's book Rising Strong. Brene Brown's relatable stories and experiences of those who "Dared Greatly" and failed (as we all have) is humbling, funny, insightful, educational and ultimately inspirational. I listened to the audiobook, read by the author, who brings her own research, humor, passion and perspective to the text. Living a brave and wholehearted life is not always easy and the process of getting back up and trying again after we fall and fail is some of the most important work that we as humans ever do. This book tells us how rise strong and empowers all who read to be a little more courageous, daring and brave in how we live, love, parent and lead. Excellent book. Not boring. Interesting, easy to read and learn from. Highly recommended.

I liked this so much better than I was expecting to. There was nothing groundbreaking, but I feel like it helped me to better recognize things that I do and how to deal with negative feelings more productively.

There is something about Brené Brown that seems to always present her books in my life when I need them the most. This was a delightful read - I loved that the author was the one who narrated. But beyond that, I was able realize some of the things I was doing in my life that had the potential to keep me down. Even better was that my husband was listening around the same time, and the way we communicate with each other and with our children has changed because of this book. I'm a lifelong fan of Brené's work and am thrilled that each new release continues to help so many, including myself.
