This book had some cool imaginative scifi aspects, and sociocultural frameworks that makes me love queer fiction in new universes- but this book dragged on and never felt like it comitted to a plot until 75% through. At first it's jarring, I had to check I wasn't reading a book in the middle of a series, but no. It tries to do everything introductory too fast and then ultimately becomes stagnant soon after. I will read the planned sequels, but I'm disappointed by how this book feels like a prequel with no plot- still confused on the stakes of this universe.

This story is so different from anything I’ve read. Sci fi, queer. The use of pronouns is amazing and interesting.

I didn’t like the intermissions personally. They felt unnecessary. And almost like the story couldn’t carry itself without them.

And I’m not fond of books having multiple endings. This one had two. BUT. They were both good and well executed, so it’s forgiven.

Misery is a deeply complicated and flawed character and I loved reading about her journey and cannot wait to read more.

i didn't know how much i needed joan of arc + religious politics but in space + pacific rim but i did

(4.5) I won an ARC and this was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and it delivered!! First of all, a reminder that this is the first entry in a trilogy (I didn't know and started getting very anxious when the last hundred pages loomed in lol)
Misery Nomaki is the kind of feral goblin of a protagonist that I love. They're a crook. They're a Messiah. What could go wrong?
The story centers a lot around them, developing the side characters less, but I didn't mind to be honest. It feels very much like the storytelling format is focusing on Misery on purpose, and it reinforces the notion of their importance in-universe.
The world mixes science and magic in a way that I found particularly interesting: Misery can touch some varieties of holy stones and harness their powers to spectacular results.
It took me a bit to really get into the plot, but by the end I was thoroughly hooked, and I hope there will be an announcement for the sequel soon!
