A Spark of Light

This contemporary fiction presents an important subject and informative read (sometimes a bit too dry, shallow and educational, I feel like Jodi Picoult does that often, what I call "presenting the research" - if I want to educate myself on abortion, I'll research it, not read a novel). There were too many POVs (10!!!), without any clear delineations, so sometimes it was hard to follow. While the format could've been interesting, starting with the end and going back, one hour at a time, to discover what lead them there, but it took away the element of surprise and got redundant with time. By Noon, I was kinda bored. The very long chapters did not help. The final twist was a good one, I did not see it coming (although I mostly skimmed the second half, so maybe that's why I missed it). All in all, not my favorite book by this author, which kinda sucks, because the subject matter had major potential.

Interesting take. It really balances both perspective. Very informative. A little slow. Sorting out the characters is a bit tedious at first and the plot twists weren’t mind blowing. I didn’t hate the story though.

Excellent book. Especially with what is going on in the world today. Highly encourage everyone to read.

such an important read. this would be a hands down five star book if it was just a tad less messy to read. I felt like sometimes I had to flip back to figure out things. but anywho it was so good and devastating which i ate right up. i honestly think it’s a must read but trigger warning for sure.

read it for book club and I rlly liked it. There were some drawbacks due to the style of writing and I kind of felt like George needed a bigger catalyst than the story gave him but overall pretty good. Loved Olive and Peg <3

This book lost me a couple of times throughout the read. Small Great Things was an amazing book. It opened me to an entire world of opinions and happenings that I knew nothing about.

While Spark of Light was quite the opposite. As someone who has worked in the pro-life world and takes a hard stance on pro-life, this was a major disappointment. The way she protrayed any pro-life characters, thoughts or events was extremely disappointing. The propoganda in this book was what made me have a hard time finishing it. It wasn’t because I didn’t agree with it, because I often read books I may not agree with. It was because it painted the pro-life side in such bland (and ignorant) contrast to the pro-choice aspects.

If you are someone who is pro-life and wonder if this book might be a good way to understand more points from each side, just go read some wikipedia articles.

I still love Picoult’s writing style, it is extremely well written. I just can’t get behind her main pushes in this book.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Think this is too heavy for me at the moment. I feel like I could go back to it at some point, but I need something lighter

Usually Jodi’s books have excellent ‘twists’ at the end - but this one was far too predictable.
