If you typically enjoy light rom com reads, this author might not be for you. Her premises and cover art look like they'll fit that genre, but I find her stories to be written around messy friendships and there's always at least one supremely toxic male character. In this one you have the FMC who has just left a serious relationship because she was basically trapped into a proposal in front of her toxic no longer in laws. In looking to find a new place to live, she finds a room at a house with a male roommate that she agrees to without meeting him. It turns out he is the runaway groom from the wedding that takes place during the opening chapter where she was the photographer. There is a lot of soul searching on both their parts while they cohabitate. She's forced to examine her past toxic relationships and how they got her where she is now. At one point, she makes a decision that brings her most toxic ex back into her life, which threatens to ruin her livelihood. At least in this book, the toxic character gets his ass served to him after she and other females band together. While the author still touched on heavier topics in this book, there was enough lightness that it wasn't as uncomfortable to read as some of her others. It's definitely not my favorite book, but I certainly enjoyed it more than some of her other ones.

Much more serious topic than I’d expected with very light romance. That’s a tough angle to swing, especially with some of the elements in the middle. Overall I’m glad the author is writing across a variety of experiences and there’s a lot developed well here. I wouldn’t recommend this book as a first read by the author (it was my second) but more as a last stop in the portfolio. I think the main character felt a little underdeveloped in how she built her strength, and the love story needed more moments to build trust and chemistry - the scenes were too few to build a slow burn. I loved the friend though and want a spinoff with her.

5 stars across the board! Mad About You made me feel all of my emotions - anger, sadness, joy, fear, anxiety, and many more. There were times where I had to pause the audiobook just to recollect my thoughts, ground myself, and send a careful reminder that this is a story and not a reflection of my past experiences.

So many people encounter a Scott or John in their lives - and I am constantly pushing myself to be the best Harriet I can be. It’s a reminder that even though we believe we have moved on from relationships by ending them, it takes strength and work to fully move on and love yourself, and be able to rebuild yourself by leaning on the support systems around you. Overall, incredible read after Just Last Night. Definitely check your trigger warnings though!

Not what I expected at all! There's not actually that much time  focused on the main romance. Much more of the book is
a study of controlling relationships and trying to move on
. I enjoyed it.

I did skip about 100 pages and then go back and read them after the end, but I think that says more about me and my general frustration with romance novels right now than about the book.

I really, really, really enjoyed this book. It might be shelved as a romance, but it's really about Harriet's strength and tenacity and her fight against trauma, the patriarchy, and the bullshit of men!! And hey, if theres a hot guy to get in the end, thats just a big bonus!

But seriously-- this book is about women. Harriet, Lorna, Nina, Marianne, and even Roxy. It is about the power of women when they come together, and the strength it takes to acknowledge the trauma of emotional abuse. And how fucking frustrating it is when these abusive men are seen as upstanding, funny, 'great guys' by everyone else when, in reality, they are terrible.

Harriet and Cal's romance was a little side plot in my opinion, even though it is clearly building throughout the book. I was so gratified by Harriet, Nina, and Marianne coming together in the end to ruin Scott and stand up for their truths. And I think this was well written with regards to coercive control, and how pernicious, secretive, and destructive it is in the lives of those who survive it. Hats off to Mhairi!
