I love Mhairi McFarlane's writing style. She is so clever and funny, I've enjoyed every book I've read from her. This one was probably the least romance-centric book. There is a bit of a romantic sub-plot, but the vast majority of the book is Harriet dealing with the fallout from her last relationship, and some baggage from her past that resurfaces. I really liked the emphasis on female friendships in this book, as well as just general female-solidarity.

Overall, another great book by Mhairi McFarlane!

A somewhat heavy plot but well done. Also I was gasping at the edge of my seat at the end there. Oh the romance and the swoon of it all. I’m giggling and kicking my feet.

Ugh. I did NOT like this book, but 1 star reviews should be reserved for DNFs. I was already too far into this book to abandon it once I realized how badly I hated this book. As many others have stated it is not a romance. It’s is a book about victimhood and taking your power back. And if that sounds empowering, then please note that it is highly Implausible the way she regained her power

I did not care for the FMC. I feel like the author must have received feedback early in the editing stages because all my complaints are voiced by her frenemy in the back half of the book.

I don't know how to rate this one. I can't tell if I'm just picking the wrong books this year, or if I'm being an overly critical salty little gremlin.

This book is marketed as a romance, and it's really not. The romance is a subplot at best, and it's not very well done (underdeveloped and rushed).

This is mostly a story about dealing with the aftermath of toxic relationships, and female friendship. And there was the whole
both my parents died from cancer thing
(not really a spoiler, that's revealed within the first chapter or two), which was an unpleasant surprise. My fault for not checking the content warnings. Anyway, those are all important topics, but not what I was expecting or in the mood for.

If you want a romance, I wouldn't recommend this. It leans heavily into contemporary and is more "women's lit" than anything (quotes because I don't like that descriptor, but don't know a better alternative).
