Didn't actually finish. I very much wanted to get through it, but the writing was a bit dry and hard to follow.

I'm unsure if it was because I listened to this instead of reading it with my eyes, but I did not find this story engaging. I kept finding it hard to pick up. Maybe reading it with my eyes would have been better. There were bits of brain-tingle moments, but not enough to keep wanting to discover what was happening.

Read for a book group. Schiff is a solid biographer, I just don't think Adams left her enough source material to craft a compelling biography around. I learned some things. It made me think that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Adams was interesting in that he used a lot of the disinformation and conspiracy theory tactics that are used in modern politics today with one significant exception--Adams was a man of clearly defined principles and all of his actions were in service to those principles. Power didn't change him, money didn't matter to him, lasting Founding Fathers fame eluded him. He remained true to his principles throughout, sometimes to his detriment. He may have been the father of the disinformation movement, but I like to think he would be horrified by what it has devolved into.

unfortunately, i finished this entire book.

narrative-wise, this is significantly lacking. i realize samuel adams is a tough man to pin down, but as the book went from scene to scene and event to event, it felt extremely convoluted.

usually biographies humanize and give immediacy to figures from history. this one did not. i feel like i know just as much about samuel adams as when i started because this book did little to nothing to bring him to life.
