I don't know how to rate this book. I felt a sense of unease the whole time reading it and although there was something kind of poetic about the writing, I walked away thinking, What was the point of this book? Nothing was ever really resolved. It was just kind of.. weird.

Not the best book and not the worst. I enjoyed most of the story but I had a hard time finding a meaning or purpose to it. The characters were interesting and the story of Pop and Riche was, gripping. It just felt like a lot of the book didn't need to be there and it really didn't make much sense to me.

I’ve always said that sometimes There is a difference between a writer and a storyteller. I’d say James Patterson is a storyteller. I’d say Markus Zusak is a writer. (And a storyteller and a god among men...but I digress) Ward is the epitome of a writer. Certain sentences in this book blew my mind and I read with my mouth hanging open. The writing of this book was so vivid and gritty, that at times I actually got sick to my stomach. A writer who can illicit a physical response in the reader is churning out some pretty amazing stuff. Not easy stuff, mind you. This was a hard book to swallow at times. It was also gorgeous and stunning and worthy of every bit of praise it has received.

Everybody loves a road trip, right? Oy. Lucky us, we get to read about this one rather than get in that car.
Expected after reading Salvage the Bones and blurbs for this: the prose that makes you slow down, the strong reliance on internal dialog, the importance of family, the sense of place.
Not so expected: thinking about what makes a bad parent, mulling about intentions and choices, and ghosts. Ghosts!

Stunning. I need to sit and think about this one.
Beautiful prose, ugly, ugly truths.
