If Amy Farrah-Fowler from Big Bang Theory lived in Scotland and had a dark traumatic past, she’d be Eleanor Oliphant. Very entertaining and witty with a unique story of mental anguish.

This really picked up in the second section, thankfully. Slow to start but I really enjoyed it by the end. Saying that, though, the ending felt really unsatisfying - I think I wanted a little 1 year later chapter to see her development? But maybe that’s wishful thinking and I should be happy with the slow progress she made within the book.

Just saying

4 might be a bit of a stretch, but i did really read it pretty quickly and i did find it compelling. in some ways eleanor reminded me of my aunt who also lives in glasgow and was somewhat of a loner for much of her life. eleanor grew on me a lot as a character, and it was so heart warming to read through her transition. its crazy to think about the way life would seem if you truly had no friends or family to guide/help you through it. the mystery of learning exactly what happened in her childhood/with the fire was well done, in that it kept you interested but clearly wasn't the whole point of the story. i figured out pretty early on there had been a little sister, and then it was pretty easy to piece together that her mom had probably started the fire and that she was most likely dead. this book certainly argues for the beneficial power of therapy! at times i wondered if eleanor was on the spectrum at all, but i guess in the end it's irrelevant. i like to think that she and raymond are going to go on an actual date at the end.
