another 3.5 and you best believe I will be finishing the series

4.5*
There must be some sort of crack in miss Elizabeth’s books because I stayed up until 2 am to finish this after reading and loving The Summer We Fell. There’s just something about two characters antagonizing each other that I eat up every time. The dialogue in this book made me laugh out loud and I couldn’t help but love the interactions between Josh and Drew.

don’t look at me for reading another one of these w these dam covers ok !! had to find out what her bestie did!! this book was fine, i liked the characters fine but wasn’t blown away by anything. it’s exactly what u think ur gonna get

This was boring and it felt like it took forever for the main characters to get together. Once I reached the midpoint I was not interested anymore.
slow-paced

hated it.

a couple of things i disliked: the main characters, their relationships with everyone around them, how strange and odd it felt and how little it made me care about them as a unit or individually. don't understand how anyone would think this was funny banter tbh. i think the other two books i've read of hers did this much better. actively disliked drew. i'm not really a lover of the pop star~ thing in a book.

the main thing i disliked: the callous and frankly disgusting way this talks about somalia??? the male main character here is a dr who works in a refugee camp and the way it's dealt with in the book left me with SUCH a weird and odd taste in my mouth. the beginning of this book has a few jokes about it which...okay fine, i guess people make jokes, but it felt in particularly bad taste given the way the rest of the novel discusses it. and some of them just DIDN'T need to be there! also in the end, one of the main "crisis" points in this book is how dangerous somalia is and it was dealt with badly. i know next to nothing about the country, tbh, apart from what's occasionally on the news but if it made me feel uncomfortable w/ how this discussed it, i can't imagine how it would feel if you were more familiar or it was your own country!!!

the start of the book didn't grab me but i was happy enough to continue but the further into this i got the less and less comfortable i felt with this. i just don't think there were anywhere near enough nuance or depth given to this? i understand it's a romance novel, okay, but if you don't want to deal with harsher topics like this, make him be a doctor somewhere else. i just don't think there's any excuse for the treatment of somalia in this book. i really don't.

i'm willing to read from this author again -- i'll finish this series out at some point -- but it's given me pause. with kindness, it was at least gauche. this is a clumsy and very misguided attempt to discuss anything relating to emergency doctors in a country experiencing significant tension!!! i don't understand why there had to be all white saviour-y nonsense in this. to what end? to make her handsome square jawed doctor look good for the readers? ridiculous.

This story was perfect in every way. Drew is just the right combination of angst, self-doubt and bravado that I love her completely. Josh almost seemed jealous from his first appearance but he’s just snarky enough that I wasn’t sure if he loved or hated Drew. They both have unique lives and strained families so there’s a common thread despite them coming from different worlds. I so enjoyed Josh fussing over Drew and taking care of her, especially on the camping trip. Six was annoying before he even arrived so there was no contest for me who Drew should be with but she did date him first.

There’s a little of everything in this story. We have love, heat, action and suspense. This book scared me in a few places and made me sad in others but it’s ultimately a joyful story with a HEA and I adore it. These two are some of my favorite characters that I’ve read recently and I just wanted more Drew and Josh. This is an instant favorite I'll definitely read again.

SpoilerThis might be an unpopular opinion but this book genuinely disappointed me. I just read the first book in this series with Hayes and Talia, “A Deal with the Devil”, and I absolutely ADORED it!! Drew is Talia’s best friend in the first book and I felt so much more empathic to her life and her situation throughout that book.

In this book, Drew just liked to complain. Despite being given multiple opportunities to make her life and situation better, she refused to take them. I’m not saying she didn’t have things to complain about but I can only take so much of people ignoring obvious answers and offers to help themselves.

Josh is the only reason this is getting 3 stars instead of 2 (and he’s honestly on thin ice for that “men are scientifically required to look at breasts” crap) He was incredibly sweet and caring and despite being so far away did his best to be there for her and care for her.

Now, for my biggest gripe with this book: Why was everything solved OFF PAGE??????
Throughout the book, we’re told about the bad management deal Drew is in and she makes a call at the end of the book telling Ben to go through with the case but that’s it. Suddenly, “9 months later”, the case is closed off page. One of the primary sources of conflict throughout this book. The same thing happens with showing their relationship to Josh’s family. They make a big stink about, Josh kisses her in front of everyone, Six has to be held back, “9 months later” he’s okay because his mom told him she’s about to be a part of the family?????
