Oh man this was so much better than I expected it to be. The synopsis was kind of confusing so I was put off by it but it was so good. I have to read the next one ASAP.

I always love stories that involve the Four Horsemen and urban fantasy is one of my favourite genres, so picking up this book was a no-brainer for me. For the most part, it hit every single mark, too. The visualizations and the action were spot-on. I was deeply immersed and could see everything happening as though I were there. All of the characters (and their horses) had distinct personalities and it was really engaging to see how the main character, Gideon (who I like and who had a good arc), interacted with all of them. Particularly Marcus, whose relationship with Gideon is one I would like to see expanded. There were some times where the story dragged on for me, and I could feel my focus slipping a little bit. This was usually at the parts where the narrative skipped between the past and the present. Sometimes I find this concept interesting but here it didn't always seem to flow for me. But that's not a big complaint (especially at the insane ending) because it was a really good read and I enjoyed the concept a lot. Definite recommend if you're looking for a change in urban fantasy and young adult fantasy!

I am so happy I borrowed this book from the library. I have seen a lot of people give this book a 3 star rating however I LOVED this book. First off it has a horse on the cover so I’m in automatically. (yes I’m a sucker for a book with a horse on the cover.. or a dog for that matter) Second it’s about the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse!! What a great idea!!

This first book follows Gideon aka WAR, he wakes up after an accident at Army Ranger training to find a weird cuff on his wrist. After he wakes up he finds out he was actually dead for a couple of minutes. Weird things start happening around Gideon and he doesn’t understand why people keep getting super angry with him. He goes to a party in his sister’s apartment building when he runs into Daryn. While he is at this party the demons show up to get the “key” . Then the real adventure starts he learns that he is WAR and he must travel with Daryn who can tell where all the horsemen are to secure Conquest, Famine, and Death.

I loved War’s POV in this book and how he connects with some of the horseman but not all of them. He is attracted to Daryn I’m just going to put that out there. However there is barely any romance in this book or love at first sight. It’s basically find all the horseman and fight! It’s pretty cool how Veronica Rossi has Gideon captured and he is telling the story of how everything happened. Towards the end there are quite a few plot twists. I totally did not see the “key” coming and how it works!! I loved, loved, loved the scenes were Gideon finally gets over his fear of Riot his horse. The ending was brutal I honestly don’t know if I can wait until 2017 for the next book. Dear Veronica if you would like someone to read the book in advance please let me know! I’ll do it!!!

On a side note I hope Bas’s story is not the last story because I may have a tiny crush on him. He is adorably sweet. …he is the one guy you never have to doubt the whole way through the book.

I highly recommend this book. I am so happy I read it..

The premise of this book is very exciting. Four horsemen of the apocalypse, literal possibility of end of the world destruction, and an all important quest. What makes this book really stand out to me, is the way it is framed. Essentially the main battle of the story has already occurred, and the reader is thrust into the story as Gideon must find a way to deal with what happened.

The story is told mostly through flashback, and through Gideon's wry, sarcastic viewpoint. I just loved Gideon as a character, and how he processed things. He's gone through a lot, and it shows in how he's developed throughout the story. He's sensitive, flawed, and an honorable, nice guy at heart. Even though he has anger issues. I think he's the perfect narrator for this book, and wonderful to get to know.

Another aspect of this book that really appealed to me, was in how, while the reader is learning about everything that led up to the present day with Gideon, Gideon is also processing his surroundings and getting clues about why he's being held by the people interrogating him. The weaving of past and present is beautifully done in the book, and kept me invested in all the action and drama.

With the four other main characters, I enjoyed seeing how they came to trust each other and find the best way of working together. The complexity of needing to show how each of these characters adjust to their circumstances and having to deal with having powers and with demons, must have been difficult to balance just right in the story, but the author pulls it off, and make the whole world feel believable. It's also a fresh kind of fantasy world - at least I'm not familiar with a lot of fiction that deals with horsemen of the apocalypse and demons. So this was a very refreshing and intriguing read!

I think the only thing that I didn't love was the romance. I thought it all happened too fast, and it felt jarring for the circumstances, since there was so much going on, and so much at stake. I felt a little impatient with Gideon for being distracted. But the romance is not a major part of the story, thankfully, so it didn't bother me too much.

Overall, this was a very exciting read, with a wonderful voice in the protagonist, and an excellent, mysterious fantasy world.

I'm having a hard time deciding on a rating for this book. I liked the story, and I liked some of the characters, just not the main character.

I liked the concept of this story and found it really engaging towards the latter chapters in the book when the story began to be told in present tense. While I liked the flash-back story telling from Gideon's interrogation, it made it hard to connect with the story - constantly being jarred from past to present. The action picked up in the last few chapters and I'm eager to seeing how the story develops in book two.

Eigenlijk 3,5 ster. Een superleuk boek met een goed verhaal, alleen kwam de climax best laat en vond ik dat het verhaal niet echt snel las. Maaar de opbouw was wel echt origineel, het verhaal had veel humor en leuke karakters!

What a disappointment, promising plot, awful characters and development.
