I learned a lot even though it was pretty dense. I didn’t like how he described his female patients. I also felt like there were parts that might traumatize/retraumatize someone with ptsd reading this book. I also heard it is more pseudoscience than real proven science? So idk. Interesting but a bit problematic
Not great as an audiobook. Will attempt to read the physical copy at some point.

This much-recommended book was indeed interesting, though I feel I already knew a lot of what was written!
I think this book functions as a nice treatise on how to better our society and help our society protect those who have been traumatised, though I wish it provided more practical tips for an individual.

I found this book overly dry and far too long. The opening chapters in particular were difficult to get through, filled with numerous traumatic stories that felt excessive and, at times, unnecessary. Much of the book reads like a semi-autobiographical account of the author’s life, with each treatment he endorses presented as a kind of “discovery.” I found this repetitive and at times exhausting to read. It’s interesting to me at one point in the book the author is forced by a colleague to confront his own voyeurism - this book has many parts in which I feel are only included because of this tendency.
When the narrative shifted to describing various therapeutic practices, the tone often suggested each was a kind of miracle cure, illustrated with extensive case studies which I don’t think is intentional.
That said, I do think the author’s conclusions are both important and thought-provoking. The final chapters were especially poignant and relevant, particularly in the current climate. I just wish the book had been more concise and accessible—perhaps I’m not the intended audience, but I believe the key ideas could have been conveyed just as effectively in a shorter, more focused work.

helped me understand a lot of shit. technically did not fully finish it yet but i’m going to give it to a friend who needs it way more than me rn.
definitely will be revisiting this book in the future, have made a bunch of notes in it.
was great for learning about why i am the way i am in relationships and seeing my behaviors as facts and numbers. this helps me detach from my emotions helped me see my dysfunctional actions from afar and made me realize why they naturally happen and what i can do to change them.
