Primary Inversion is a a difficult book to categorize. It definitely has romance, but it's not a typical "romance" novel. There is a "happy for now" with the hope of a "happy ever after," which is important to me as a reader, but there is so much more to this book. I think the main appeal of this book to the romance reader would be the intensely character-driven story. The sci-fi details are intricate and amazing, but the character development trumps even that. Sauscony is an amazing heroine. Her personal journey through this book is heart-rending and satisfying.

This is one of many books set in the Skolian Empire, and I plan on returning there to "visit" in the not-too-distant future.

I listened to the audiobook from audible.com narrated by the always excellent Anna Fields.

3.5 stars. I really, really liked parts of this - the setting, the science, the counselling sessions, the flawed, competent lead. I did not like the romance - particularly the focus on marriage. The soul mate trumping all other bonds/responsibilities angle is not to my taste. Saying that, I skimmed this 15+ years ago, and am pleased to have re-read. Will prob check out the next in the series, as it's certainly different!

About 1/3 of the way through this book, I realized that it was Romeo and Juliet....IN SPACE!!! They even got a (gender-swapped) balcony scene. As I write this, I'm going back and forth between 2 and 3 stars, so I guess it's a 2 1/2. Not awful, but something of a slog.

How does one person contain so much talent? Asaro has a PhD in chemical physics, was a professional dancer, advises the government through SIGMA...?!! If THAT weren't enough she's written an amazing series with Women in charge where the man gets passed around like a ho & wars are fought through a metaphor of chess. The game she describes really shows she has her PhD in science. Just wow. If you like syfy & strong females I recommend this series to you.

The first of her books (1996) and it's quite a good one. I deeply miss the female consciousness in science fiction. Male authors like David Weber who create female leads seem to be missing something that an author like Asaro can reveal and the reader can warm to. The novel shows the earmarks of a first book with a plot that is on the simplistic and predictable side. It is, however, intelligently written with a wonderful fusion of biotechnology and psychology and a context for both. The intricate characters and their circumstances easily kept me going. She has smoothly integrated into this book her background of chemistry and physics from UCLA and Harvard. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of her work. By the way, her impressive bio is definitely worth looking up. I may be in love.

Clunky technical exposition without much in the way of hard sci-fi interesting ideas. Lots of romance with overtones of fear and background of rape. I’m glad we have moved past the ‘90s and can write more books with female main characters that aren’t traumatized by rape.
