I loved the central characters and all the horror movies references, but for me this suffered the same fate as the other Moreno-Garcia novels in that the final act kind of fell flat for me.

this finally broke my reading slump! starts out a whisper and ends a bang. the creeping pace was chilling and built so much atmosphere as the novel progressed. despite it being late and too scary to read before bed, i found it difficult to put this book down every night. i feel like this book haunted me while i was reading it, once i even checked behind the shower curtain when i went to the bathroom in the middle of the night. i also loved the dynamic between the two main characters, complex and tricky and beautiful. it was enriched by them being world worn 38 year olds and not some teeny boppers fighting a mystical foe. the magic lore was so interesting too and i loved how it examined how Nazi occultism, although powerful, was often a hypocritical mishmosh appropriated from the very groups they saw as lesser. i can definitely see why this book isn’t for everyone but it was definitely for me.

Listen I want to really like this book, but dang there was a lot of explaining. And some of the explanations were lies! Get outta here. Still a banger just be ready for a lecture or three.
