Quick Thoughts - It's VERY 90s. It has a dark setting and Geralt isn't interested in making it brighter. I enjoyed the folktale-like approach to the short stories, but I feel like I would have been a bit confused with some of the context (characters / spells) had I not played the games prior. It gives very questionable treatment and descriptions to women characters, including minors, which I wasn't a fan of.

I liked the book. We follow some great characters, and the plot was alright.
Now, the book is probably 80% dialogue, and in my opinion, that can get really boring very quickly. And it did. I liked that it was a form of short stories. But again.. too much dialogue. Also.. Dandelion is my fav and will always be my fav character from this book series!
Now I know, loads of fans hate the netflix series.. I actually really like the series. With THIS source material, the producers did a pretty OKAY job. Yes, they cut some stuff out, but also.. you wouldn't want to watch a whole season with just Geralt having a conversation with random people. That would get any views and would be any fun. In my opinion, the producers of the series took the most important things from the book and made a really good season out of it.

Soooo, it definitely helped that I've seen the tv-series, so I knew most of the characters and stories in this novel. I also knew the names of most of the monsters. If I hadn't, it would've been quite confusing.
This is the first book in The Witcher series reading order, but it's not the start of the story itself. It's a collection of short stories. It's cleverly put together, with The Voice of Reason chapters that bind everything together, and it's a nice introduction into the world of the Witcher. I definitely enjoyed reading this, firstly because I like the characters and the books obviously give them more depth. Secondly, I liked the writing style - it's not overly complicated, it pulls you in and keeps you engrossed in the story. And thirdly, even though I'd seen these stories played out in the tv-series already, it was fun to read them again!
And yes, of course I'm imagining Henry Cavill the entire time.
And the fact that Jaskier's name in English is Dandilion makes me giggle.

I don’t really get the hype. I wanted to like this as a fan of the games, but the story structure is confusing and there’s too few twists to make a real fun story. These read more like fairy tales. I will say that the “last wish” short story is easily a 5 star section in an otherwise mediocre book.

You know, for a loosely related set of short stories The Last Wish was pretty good. I'd had some trouble getting focused on it before, but I can't think of why now. I made it through pretty easily and now I want to read more Witcher tales ASAP. I'd also like to run through the games again, so... yeah, pretty good.
If this is your first introduction to the Witcher, you're sure to discover what most of the world already knows: that Geralt is awesome. If you've played the games and only now made it to the books: then this provides a little bit of helpful background—especially if you’ve already played W3:TWH. While I'm looking forward to some full-length adventures now, this was a great introduction to Geralt of Rivia.
If this is your first introduction to the Witcher, you're sure to discover what most of the world already knows: that Geralt is awesome. If you've played the games and only now made it to the books: then this provides a little bit of helpful background—especially if you’ve already played W3:TWH.
