This book was really confusing to me, but the writing was lovely! I read a review that I posted below, and that explained a lot, and why I gave the book 4 starts instead of 3.

Incredibly beautiful and stays perched in your heart when over. Several times I missed my bus stop, and never cared because I wanted to stay in this book. I put off finishing it for days because I didn't want to leave!

DID NOT FINISH

I had a difficult time reading this novel. From the odd way Diane Setterfield decided to word things to the odd and regretfully off putting phrase selection. Many times a sentence had more than two ands, something I was taught in EVERY creative writing class I have ever took, was a No No. I just couldn't get into this novel and I tried multiple times and on multiple occasions. I can't even bring myself to give it a rating. That's how little I read of it.

I don’t like Diane’s writing style, Because I think it's old-fashioned. But the more I read, the less I minded. I also expected more from the end, but it got me thinking and I’m not as disappointed as I was when I had just finished. I’m not saying I didn’t like it, I just don’t recommend it. There are millions of books that are better.

Diane Setterfield wrote one of my very favorite books of all time, “The Thirteenth Tale.” I knew it wasn’t likely that her follow up effort would be as intricate and gothically perfect as her first novel, and so I was able to enjoy this book more by knowing it would be something different. This reads more like a fairy tale, an allegory of the rich man who wastes his life in work only to realize in death what he missed. The writing is of course beautiful because that what Setterfield does, and I know have an odd admiration for the poetic beauty of the “rook.”
